Anchor \"tripping\" shackle

Does anybody know the technical term, for the shackle that attaches to (a) the anchor chain, (b) the anchor ring, & that the "trip breakout" can be adjusted by twisting the body of the shackle?
My friend has one on his Raider & its brilliant, compared to the "suck it & see" method of cable ties, which either snap & leave you drifting, or wont break out even when your bow is underwater! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif He hasn't got a clue what it is called, it came with the boat, & I want one. Somebody out there must know what its called, & where I can get one? /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I think you're on about the Anchor saver http://www.anchorsaver.com/Home.html.

A few of the local leisure fishermen have got them around here. I've found that the leisure fishermen tend to like setting their anchors up this way. I'm not sure I'd trust it for an overnight stay. I'd be afraid that when the tide turned and the boat swings the other way round it might trip the anchor whilst your sleeping down below.

I don't know if there's a supplier in the UK. Maybe they sent off to America for them.

Thanks for the responses, I am awaiting a photo of this "creature" to arrive from my friend, it isn't an "Anchor Saver" I have looked at that, The thing he has, has a body like a large white plastic cotton reel (that turns to adjust the "tripping pressure") it has a shackle at one end, & a pincer like clamp at the other end, as you turn the plastic body you increase/decrease the setting, it's a good bit of kit!

Still waiting for the photo, but I have found the product, if you Google "Paomar Italy" then scroll to "accessori nautica marine" then select "salvaancore" you will see the product itself, the trip setting can be set between 8kg & 200kg, all I have to do now is find out who the importer is! Nobody in the chandlery business seems to recognise it though, I have e-mailed the makers to see who their distributors are in UK.

It seems to only go up to anchor's of 8kg. I wonder if they have larger sizes as well.

This is an old technique, known as "skowing an anchor".

Described in Frank G Carr's Book "The Yacht Master's Guide" but instead of a gadget, the cable is stopped to the anchor ring with spunyarn.

I have tried the light line, & the cable tie methods, but either it breaks out too soon & you drift, or the bow is under the water & it still wont break, I want something that is infinitely adjustable, so that once I set it correctly, I dont have to worry about the next cable tie being to within 0.005mm of the last one.

You don't say what size of craft you are playing with but, if it is smallish, can I respectfully suggest that you persevere with cable ties? With our 23 foot fishing boat I played around with different sorts of ties and now use 3. I sorted this out through trial and error until I got the balance I was looking for. Now I anchor the fishing boat in all sorts of places where I wouldn't dream of sticking the yacht, such amongst reefs and big rocks, the fish love these places. One such example is Christchuch ledge where the reef is formed of rocks that will gobble any non-tripped anchor (you might ask me how I know this.....)

With the yacht I don't use breakout just ensure that I anchor in places where I can get the anchor up...
