Hi I have a recently purchased Hardy Navigator 18 - 2' draft and 18' length - we will be using her mainly in the Menai Straits and close to the coast towards Nefyn. Is there a good calculation for the anchor chain and rope? We have an anchor with the boat but I need to sort the chain etc. We will be staying close to the shore. Any help appreciated even if just pointing me towards a decent site that can help. Quick edit - would this suffice?

  • 3 Strand Rope 12mm x 50m
  • Galvanised Chain 6mm x 5m

No there isn’t a “ good “ calculator. But there are plenty of calculators.

Suggest speak to locals who anchor a lot in your neck of the woods who know whats works best .

For me my tuppence worth you need at least 10 M of said chain .

Popular wisdom says a boat length of chain plus rode. In your case this would be around 6m of chain + 12mm rope. Given the straits I’d go 10m of chain + 100m of 12mm 3 strand. Jimmy Green is your friend Rope and Rigging | Boat Chandlers | Marine Supplies

Edited to say; please don’t start an actual anchor thread, life is far too short….

I’d go for anchorplait, much easier to handle and store.

Forum member Kawasaki is the local Menai Strait guru, works/worked with a company called Seawake.
Sometimes local knowledge advice can prevent a lot of ongoing issues into the future. He is a nice bloke and doesn’t mind passing on helpful info, as the area can be daunting for the uninitiated.

Agreed, but never take him up on his offer of going out on his rib, in particularity if he hands you the wheel just as you approach the bridge with a big spring tide in full flow and then directs you to pass through the narrowest span.
He’s a bastard:ROFLMAO:
