Well, with 84 people having voted for their 5 key criteria, out of 10 possibles, the results were, in order -

  1. Hold/resetting in normal circumstances - 74 votes
  2. Hold in varying sea-bed situations - 72 votes
  3. Speed/ease in initial setting - 64 votes
  4. Extreme* dependability/holding power - 54 votes
  5. Stowing/launching practicality - 47 votes
  6. Robustness/durability - 29 votes
  7. Ease/safety in handling - 27 votes
  8. Price - 23 votes
  9. Application to a particular sea-bed type - 15 votes
  10. Manufacturer backup/service/reputation - 7 votes

A number of points were made: that people's attitude would vary according to size/weight of boat, crew situation, etc. Also that *extreme was possibly drawn on the low side. Anything like this is easy to criticise, pretty unscientific - but interesting nonetheless.
412 votes cf. 420 possible (84 x 5). Thanks all.

I wonder which anchor would come out on top using those top 5 criteria then? :)

About 5 I can think of off the top of my head, probably more if I though harder.

I'd suggest some responders were thinking at home in 'ideal world' as opposed to what they think like when standing in a shop faced with a anchor selection.

I would say the real standing in the shop results would be more like -
Does it work well
Price
Stowage
Setting
Who made it and where
Does it look good - no I'm not kidding. The phrase 'but it looks ugly' is a pretty common one and has turned people off a anchor more times than you would imagine. Yes I can't understand the logic of that mind-set either.
Then the rest, if even at all.

There is one other that comes up a lot more than it should but I'm not going there as it is not performance related.

Guess what I do for a job? ;)
