SWMBO and I are tentatively looking at a few boats. Mainly Racer/cruisers. Seen one we like but it has no anchor locker, obviously a tad more racer than cruiser .
Wondered what people do . It has two bow cleats so I thought chain or strop between them with a shackle in the middle attached to the anchor chain seamed the obvious option.

The other issue is what to do with all the chain you could keep it in a trug but I imagine it would be way to heavy to lug about.

Or do people just make do with a kedge and assume any anchoring is only temporary or for safety

Not sure how sure how you get round the chain problem without adding a hawse pipe as Dave suggests. As regards the anchor I would have a new stem head fitting made as we did. This means you can have twin bow rollers which are useful and I designed mine so that our Rocna anchor locks securely into position so you could do the same and the anchor can be kept there. I think it is the best place to keep it as it is always ready to use in an emergency and also cannot become a liability in heavy weather if waves crash across the foredeck.

D ring in the bow and keep a bow line tied off to the back of the boat, anchor in an aft locker in a trug. Drop it over the back and tie off anchor line (clip for chain) to the bow line when there's enough out. I do this with my sunspot as it's not that easy/safe getting up front. Only downside is it can end up arse to wind on the retrieve if you're not quick about it.

You have not mentioned if you have a bow roller as this is fairly essential for the chain not to damage the deck. Generally most bow rollers have a pin to fix an anchor whilst sailing.

Quickly checking ebay there are a couple of bow rollers for sale.

The alternative would be to have an off set anchor foller made to fit the boat. Would not cost a fortune but might be the simplest solution.

Making a chain locker in the forward cabin would be quite simple. It would be easy to make a waterproof locker in the bow with a service hatch and have this drain overboard. Then all you would need is a nice hawse pipe like http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Chain-Haw...SportingGoods_OtherSports&hash=item233ed25fb2.

Would not recommend keeping the chain in a trug and manhandling it to the bow every time you want to use it.
