Can you quote an example, of a virtual mortar bomb from Noelex (for example) from this thread please. I think Noelex' images and comments are valid, fair - non contentious, balanced and, to me an eye-opener on questionable practice. It was not so long ago this forum hosted an enormous and emotive thread on 'bendy shanks' - and Noelex is illustrating that some people have, very, short memories.

Maybe I don't share your sensitivities.

Interesting comment on the Kobra - the shank looks evenly 'brown', corroded almost as if it was simply poorly and lightly galvanised. And the hole is 'huge' - I'd have expected, as you suggest, that with that level of corrosion 'well used' but the fact that its unbent - seems to contradict.

Always unanswered questions.

Had a Kobra 2 on my previous boat, replaced the CQR that was on it. Fast forward 7 years replaced the Delta on my current boat with a Kobra 2, Never had a problem with a bent shaft. I have seen pictures of Spades, Rocnas etc with bent shafts so am sure the Kobra 2 would not be immune. Like everything it is a question of what you feel confident with

I have an oversize Spade on an Oceanranger. If I'm wandering around the Inner Hebrides, the anchor is held in place by the 'U' chain lock at the end of the shank, and the long bar at the end of the bow roller is left flopping about. If the weather gets up, I'm going any distance, or when I'm on my swinging mooring in Arisaig I unbolt the shank from the blade and tie the shank down onto the foredeck using the cleats. The blade of the Spade goes into the deck locker. It might be a bit fiddlely but works well for me.

Thanks all. I suspect that if I go down the "next gen anchor" route there'll be some custom steel work I'll need to commission to lock the thing down at the bow roller and the inboard end of the shank. Force 4 at QAB have offered to do a sale-or-return thing so I can try a manson supreme. TBH I never had an issue with my CQR copy (before it fell apart) although that was mostly in south coast mud or at worst weed over sand and I do tend to be bit prissy about re-setting when not confident. The spade 100 seems to fit better than expected (though additional steel work required to hold it down). In fact the one they give you a model for is remarkably light and easy to handle. Think I might keep it but not sure how it'll perform in water...
