Anchor fitting on Malo yacht

Alain,

Does your Malo have the anchor through the stem rather than over the stemhead? I've a friend with a M39 and it has a Bruce through the stem about 500mm below the stemhead. As far as I can see it would be impossible to fit a Rocna through the stem because the roll bar would prevent the anchor being pulled home.

I have a Nauticat 39 and had a new roller made to accommodate a Rocna 20kg. The previous roller just about fitted but didn't support the anchor properly which made a secure fixing difficult. There is a Rocna knowledge base which offers guidance on suitability for different boats. Details of my roller can be seen there: http://www.rocna.com/kb/Nauticat_39 and I see that someone has fitted a Rocna to a Malo 46 see here: http://www.rocna.com/kb/Malo_46_Classic

Would a Spade fit without the modification to the bow roller? Seems odd to invest in a new bow roller when you could use the money to invest in a new anchor.

On a Malo 34... Similar arrangement,my blue Peter style cardboard mock ups would indicate that a Rocna won't fit. The only anchor that I found that would replace the Bruce without major butchery is a Kobra.

Penalty for a Swedish boat, bow mounted
anchors aren't their strong point.

That link I gave of a Malo 46 ealier shows that the boat has a stemhead bow roller and a through stem roller. There is a Fortress turned up on the deck.

I would actually challenge anyone to tell the difference between the setting characteristics, hold and veering/turning ability of a Kobra, Rocna, Supreme, Spade, Fortress and an Excel. They have other advantages and disadvantages (which one would not always want to articulate). But to spend money on a bow roller modification when you can buy as good an anchor without modifications (and in my opinion have some other advantages) seems illogical. Some-one here spent $500 on a Rocna - and then spent $500 on a bow roller modification and I read something similar in a review years ago in ST. Spending $500 when you cannot tell the difference?

It would be unfair not to mention: I'm suspicious of the strength of the Kobra shank - having seen bent ones and knowing what it is made from - but it does not deter others who post on this forum, so they discount the issue.

I have not included the Boss simply because I have never used one.

FWIW, we have the original stainless Bruce type with 10mm chain. connecting the bruce to the chain is a 'kong' type swivel.

It just about fits through the stem head but I have to turn it through 45 degrees for it to fit a real PITA!

I am not sure I would go this way again as you cant just let the anchor go, but the Kong is supposed to be one of the best swivels on the market.

always a compromise.

Would be interested if you did manage to fit it if so please post a pic.

Your question prompted us to finally register on this forum after lurking for a long time!

Assuming the geometry of a 39 is the same as the Malo 40, fitting a 20kg Rocna is perfectly possible. Ours was fitted by Malo themselves. They had to install a larger bow roller to keep the anchor tip from resting on and banging against the stainless plate on the bow which is anyway intended to prevent the anchor damaging the gel coat.

It works pretty well and the roll bar isn't a problem.

There is a photo on the Malo website though what size boat it is I'm not sure.
