Anchor chain

Visiting the boat while laid up, I discovered kedge anchor had been lying in pool of rainwater. Took it home and now chain is covered in a white powdery substance. What is it ? and any easy method of cleaning / storing ?

presumably this is not just a chain reaction ?

At a guess I should think its Zinc Oxide. The oxidisation of the Galvanising on your anchor/chain.

And the best way to shift it is hang it over your towbar and drag it down the road for a mile or two - comes up a treat - not sure about the galvanising though

Mix up some 5:1 petrolil and give the chain a soak. Lay it out, give it a hose down, allow to dry then stow in a dry place.
