hi the anchor chain on my 25 ' folkboat project is 6mm is this strong enough?...or do i need 8mm?
It has obviously been ok in the past with previous owners.
Plenty strong enough. 8mm would set with a greater catenary (curve) and ensure a horizontal pull on the anchor, but the extra weight would be a sod to haul in unless you have a windlass.
I just spent a night at anchor in a pretty severe blow (dunno how strong it was in the night but was 7 gusting 8 the next day) and my anchor worked well - 7.5kg Bruce but with plenty of 8mm chain out. The holding was good tho'. My boat is a Sadler 25 so not so different to yours. I don't find the chain too heavy to haul - biggest problem was unsticking the hook from the bottom!! I think the thing with chain is not the strength but the weight.
Well that's good then don't have to buy chain but i need an anchor
What weight would you suggest?
talking of hauling was anchored in my old hurley 22 single handed off mull
in deep water ..too deep..and when it came to hauling it was a nightmare with a heavy anchored and 8mm chain had to haul the lot from the deep ..was glad when the chain appeared and then at least it started getting lighter!
