After untangling the anchor wrap over the weekend I don't seem to have very much!!!

I believe I have 30m of chain + 15m or wrap /forums/images/icons/shocked.gif

Bearing in mind that the Bristol channel has a tidal range of 12m I think I need to increase this!!

What do people find works best - If I use more chain then this would feed through the windlass "teeth" and can be raised lowered from the helm positions. If I use a combination of chain and then rope, the rope would need to be manualy raised using the windlass drum.

What sort of length do people normally carry?

Cheers
Jools

I had a quick windlass on my Jeanneau and if you get the right size rope then it will pull both your rope and chain through.

Make sure it is spliced or connected to the chain properly too. At least have 1.5 times the length of your boat as chain then go for at least 4 times your boat length in rope.

Hi, just having a look at the chart, both the English grounds and middle grounds have about (very roughly) 2 meters of water at LAT, so with a big spring IMHO of 16 meters, so 18 meters of water therefore about 50 meters or so of chain IMHO would give you some chance if you have a problem there. I think thats about the worse place to have a problem, anywere else is that deep anchors got no chance anyway.

hope that helps (cos i carry about 40 meters of chain /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif)

Typical fisherman Dom!!! That is generally the rule of thumb used here in Swansea.
As most decent anchorages are in fairly shallow water along the gower coast anyway.

I take it we're talking about the Jeanneau 36? Firstly, I'd be a bit pissed off that Jeanneau only saw fit to give you 30m of chain and 15m of rope on such a large expensive boat. As tcm says, the anchor is an essential safety tool in the event of total engine failure which might make the difference between losing your boat and your lives or not. Secondly, flybridge power boats carry a lot of windage so you need more anchoring power than the equivalent length of sailing yacht
IMHO, you need at least 50m of 100% chain and, whilst you're at it, check that the anchor is the correct size for the boat (look at the anchor supplier's website) and replace it if necessary with a bigger size. If Jeanneau have skimped on the chain, they may have skimped on the anchor

Agree with Micheal on this one, our Prestige 36 was delivered with 20m of chain and 10 m of warp with a 15kg anchor. The dealer of, his own violition, Changed the warp to 50m, and the chain to 30m and also upgraded the anchor to 20kg.
A word of warning though, The chain locker is not deep enough to allow sufficient fall of chain below the windlass, what this means in practice is that a crew member has to operate the remote winch in the bows and stop the chain from pilling up, we have had occasions when this has happened and the chain jumps off the gypsy.

I have the same length of chain but 45m of warp. mix is really a choice for where you anchor and what depth, plus how much weight you are able to carry. Personnally I prefer a heavier but shorter chain and more rope so I have 10mm chain and 14mm rope for a 30ft catamaran.

BTW if they have skimpt on the rope/chain, bet the anchor is inadequate as well. Go for at least one size larger than that recommended for the size of your boat.
