anchor chain cranchi zaffiro

I have just bought my boat cranchi zaffiro 34 but its in sof my anchor chain is very rusty and needs replacing it has a lofrane windlass any body know chain size and were I can get a good quality replacement and what length would you recommend as we are going out in may and I need to take one with me thanks

don't want to carry 100odd kilos of chain from the UK...
check how much you have, if you can manage 60m even better

I have a Smeraldo 37, same chain as my old Zaffiro 34, i'll measure it for you tomorrow if you like?

The SOF gets VERY deep VERY quickly. I was there last summer - come out of Antibes, turn left and in not many mins you are in 500m of water.

JFM is your best guide, but most places we were anchoring in 15m - 20m is of water was relatively typical. With 60m of chain this was fine for lunch but not longer.

I would ask the local SOF Cranchi dealer how much chain will fit in a Zafiro without it bunching up ( too much chain makes a mountain that then needs a foot treading on it to push it down which can be a pain.

I think JFM has 100m, and if we were based there full time we would as well.

We are in Beaulieu and have 60m. Deepest I have had to drop the hook was off Cap D'Ail in 15m. In a 37' boat you will be able to get in closer to the shore. Most people I have met at anchor in the SofF appear to have a greater degree of tolerance to people anchoring close than in the UK. Normally boat loads of Italians where the whole extended family is on board. They arrive, sneak in as close as they dare, drop the anchor and then everyone goes swimming, eating, smoking, drinking and enjoying themselves at the flick of a swich. It's wonderful!

I'd agree. Likely 8mm but just a chance it could be 10mm. Buy it out there- they are much better stocked on boat hardware than anyone in uk

50mm is tight. If wind gets up you will want more than that even if you're only anchored in 15m eg villefranche. I realise you have to do what is practical but aim for more than 50. I have 100m and often dump 70 m down. Eg saleccia beach in a westerly wind. In the med, forget all that daft RYA teaching of 3x scope. Aim for 6 typically.

If money is no object get ss chain because it flows like cream so you can fit more length in your chain locker. Angle of repose is much less than galvanised chain.
