I have about 20m of 8mm anchor chain fitted and I've been told that I should add a rope to it to increase the rather small amount of chain! This is in preparation for our voyage from Torquay to Ipswich to bring my new (to me!) boat home.

What rope should I be using? I have a drum on my windlass which is pretty wide.

My boat is a 40ft Fairline.

Thanks,
Matt

Crikey you shouldn't be using a chain/rope anchor rode on a 40ft mobo. Add another 40m of chain and make sure you've got a 15-20kg anchor at the end of it

50m chain into which you can splice a further 30-50m 12 or 14mm rope, either 3 strand or octoplait. chain itself will be sufficient for most purposes. Check with your windlass handbook for rope size/type recommendations.
