Someone was looking on here last week for an opportunity to "cruise in company" , I had an invitation the other day from Ancasta where they are running a trip to the Channel Islands and you get to follow Jon Mendez as lead skipper for a few days, just thought I would post this and hope the lady concerned reads this as it would appeal....perhaps

I think you just need to register/join their Ancasta Cruising Club, no cost as far as I'm aware. We joined this week but our last 2 boats have come from them, would love to do the upcoming Channel Island trip but am just too busy to get the time off right now.

Nick Hatfield is your man

I really recommend he trip. Esp if you want to 'cross' the channel and have perhaps been a little nervous to do so.
John Mendez is good company and as fairly seasoned boaters, ann and I found him very informative and learnt plenty.

I think it's a couple of hundred quid plus usual expenses and its money well spent imho

We won't make it this year as we start our cruise in a couple of weeks :( :)

I'm sure Nick would entertain anyone if they are interested....

Open to anyone / is there a cost ?
Yeah, it must be... they are letting me go on it!

I've done Alderney and Cherbourg but not brave enough to do Guernsey on my own for the first time so really looking forward to it.

Why are people so afraid of the channel islands. If you can do the Solent or Alderney then Guernsey or Jersey are a doddle.

Trust me as I've done them dozens of times that it's not hard at all...read the chart...read the pilot notes...plan in advance..pick your weather and just go.

If you can't read a chart well enough to get into st Peter Port then you should not be on a boat in the first place.

We went over to Guernsey last year with Princess on a similar type cruise, John was on our boat with, what a nice guy, learnt so much.

Very important to get pilotage right through the Alderney race, we had 7 knots of tide as we went through, but it was flat calm.

Well worth the trip.

You'll have a great time, once you had a briefing with John you'll be set to really enjoy the crossing. If the last cruise is anything to go by you'll perhaps find some really cool spots to get close up to.

Just don't let Nick and Richard order any Tequilla Boom Booms at the bar, it's not big and it not clever! :)

Should get some cheap fule as well to happy days :)

It was me who asked about cruising in company. Nick did tell me about the trip but we're in Plymouth and would have to make our way to the Solent to join them so it would be as quick to cross the channel from here. There seems to be a lot more going on in your area so we're seriously considering moving East next year. I hope everyone who goes has a good time.

Hilarious post,

but you have to understand an obvious point, the Solent is full of people who are as nervous as hell, that said your approach will never help.

The point of these cruises is to help people gain confidence and have a bit of a social along the way.

Now, I realise that to you, after your hundreds of visits to St Peter Port that if you can't read a chart you are a bit of a twat, and should just be hung by the mast of a neighbouring yacht, and I get where you are coming from, however you will never get more people in to boating with your attitudate, were you not nervous on your first trip to these shores?

The whole point is to gain confidence

SWMBO say's yes so hope to book tomorrow :) This will be our second season on our boat and will be our first trip out of the Solent so really looking forward to it.

This is similar to the response I had from the chairman of our berth holders association, which allegedly aims to promote the development of practical skills and enhance members' safety and enjoyment of their boats. I would have thought cruising in company would help to achieve those objectives but what do I know? If anyone who goes on this trip would like to write a little trip report I'd be very interested in reading it.

Why go on your own when you can share the experience with friends, unless of course you don't have any ?
