One of my young friends who has voiced an interest in sailing wants to make and fly the Anarchist flag from Seun

I remember the anarchist flag being a

However a quick google has also revealed

Do either break any rules of the sea? Given that anarchy will probably break out on board anyway and I don't think either could be confused with "official" signal flags will I cause any alarms etc?
 
Could always save the effort, and acquire a <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.sailinganarchy.com>Sailing Anarchy</A> flag

Organised Groups of Anarchists ?

Now I may be wrong but when anarchists join into organised groups, creating rules and obeying them..........

The supposed anarchist flag is plain black but there is really no such thing as an anarchist flag.
If they are true anarchists they will all have different flags.

If he is inclined toward anarchy, shouldnt he fly the Sunsail flotilla flag ?

The red and black flag became a symbol of anarchism during the Spanish civil war. It was actually the flag of the CNT-AIT anarcho-syndicalist union but came to represent anarchist movements generally in the wider world, probably as inaccurately as the skull-and-crossbones has become a symbol of 17th century piracy. The all-black flag had already been widely used as an anarchist rallying symbol from the 19th century onwards.

The A-symbol seems a bit daft to me, as much as the Conservative party having a big C on it or any other party using its single capital letter. The "A" flag/badge was widely popularised in the 1980s by post-punk bands and other cults claiming anarchist sympathies. It's also the symbol of the now-defunct Atkinson lorry firm, who engineered a series of classic but agricultural British commercial vehicle designs until the Swedes showed us how to do it so much better. But I digress!

Generally, if a flag isn't unambiguous and widely understood there ain't much point in using it, IMHO.

Many thanks for everyone's suggestions and information... and the witty bits too ... much appreciated..

I will be taking all your suggestions and info to my young friend who at 13 is discovering The Clash!..

So if any of you see a small boat being rather erratically handled with "Spanish Bombs" blaring from it around the W Coast of Scotland please do not be alarmed or press that dodgy red button on your DSC sets..
