An open letter to the Editor YM

I don\'t underestimate

Aren't Llodys agents likely to be in big ports, and be interested in mighty ships? Yachting Monthly readers are in every marina, river and creek, and I am sure that many stolen boats would be spotted. If the insures offered a reward, I believe that even more boats would be "found"

Have you read the post below from Snowleopard?

Not a bad idea but I remember some time in the dim and distant past insurance companies advertising the details of stolen boats in yottimags. As to how effective it was I couldn't say but as it's been years since it's been done I'd guess it wasn't that effective. As to YM's international appeal, it can't be that wide BUT a web site such as Buttlescut is available worldwide so surely the best place for listings of stolen boats is a web site with links from the major yottie forums ?

I have to agree, in principle at least, that this place or any yachting magazine would be a good place to run a 'stolen' feature. This place (for boats, etc) and the internet has got to be the fastest means to communicate, to as wide an audience as possible. However, that obviosly cuts two ways. The thieves and the gangs will be looking too!!! I am not that convinced that anyone seeing something as stolen on here would respond any differently to anything else they know about being stolen.

Whichever way such a scheme may be introduced, it would also have to have a kick-back for IPC media,... such is the way businesses work. What's innit for them? They work like any other business for profit, and why not?, but if a service could be 'included' in the subscription, then I am sure that this would be an extra incentive, to stay loyal to this 'brand' and 'product'.

Something I was chatting about the other day, honesty and apathy. Remember cars and shops when they didn't all have burgler alarms? I do. When one that did have an alarm that went off, everybody jumped up and did something! That's not the case nowadays. Likewise, most, if not the entire human race, still hates a thief but.... everyone loves a bargain.

Anything to make stealing (and getting away with it) more difficult, including using a dedicated stolen list, perhaps with photographs (digital is quick and easy) on this site would be a most welcome feature I am sure.

As I said in my original opening letter, the motivation for people to want to read about stolen boats, is the same motivation that people have for wanting to watch the BBC's Crimewatch. As you say "most still hates a thief", and I think that this is even more so, when it is a fellow sailors boat.

Reading an item about a stolen boat, and then about the recovery by "my" magazine, would give me a feeling that my magazine is doing what it could, to right some of to days wrongs, and I would have a reassurance that if my boat were stolen, the chances of recovery were much greater

Re: How Many Yachts....

Ah. But you were clever. You caused confusion by naming it the same as the other two 'Claymores'!!!

Perhaps after reaading throught the posts again I should have asked a more simple question. WHO amoungst this forum has never bought stolen, or believed to be stolen, boat gear?

Please do not all rush at once;)

That rather sounds like the question:

"Have you stopped beating your wife!"
