Currently sat in the airport departure lounge - with 3 hours to spare - having started working over here and Jersey yesterday, for the next 4 months.

I always thought it was a really interesting, fun, warm place to come but am rapidly changing my mind.

Yesterday it was sub-zero thanks to the strong NWly winds coming from Siberia. Too cold to walk around the marinas and not much happening. Stayed in the hotel to eat and drink last night - me and three other sad buggers.

Arrived back at the airport today, flight cancelled! Southampton Airport is closed due to the discovery of a WW2 bomb near the runway. Should be reopened around 1900 - allegedly.

Can't understand it myself - all those years planes have been landing there with no problems.

Thank goodness for free Wifi access here.

Stop Press - just been told the houses have been evacuated and roads closed, so I guess its back to the 'king hotel !!

I am sure I will enjoy myself in as the spring and summer comes along. Anybody visiting either island, please let me know so we can have a beer. Weekdays only though.

No wonder you're cold. If there's a NW wind from Siberia you must be somewhere around the Aleutian Islands. Though I didn't know there was one called Guernsey.

Spent many a happy day stuck in Guernsey airport over the last 2 years. Just wait until the fog kicks in, bombs will at least sound like a plausible excuse for not getting hom on time.

No plans to join you I'm afraid. Get yourself down to the Follies for the evening. It's just like clubs used to be when you were young!

What about coming home on Rockhopper Airways via Bournemouth. You even get sweeties passed back by the pilot .... at least I thought they sweets. Might have been ear plugs....

I was at an hotel years ago and returned to the room to find bed turned down and a fairy cake on bedside table. Hurrah! So i had a big bite of it... and discovered it was a friggin candle. Gits.

Oh yes, and some git hereabouts gave me some very realistic cigars with metal containers and everything and which i then tried to smoke. But they were sweets. No way out of that one. He's a git as well.

Re: Southampton Airport.

A few years ago they found pipe mines under the runways at Southampton and HMS Deadalus (Lee on Solent). They were steel pipes (about 12" diameter I think) under the runways filled with TNT as demolition charges in case of invasion in WW2. The mines were all cleared away with lots of people moved out of houses and the M27 closed while they did it. Looks like they must have found something else.

Spent many happy years messing around boats in Guernsey......being stuck at the airport is part of life in the Islands when the fog kick's in.........look on the bright side and think of the rapidly approaching spring. If you get the chance get down to my old stomping ground around Beaucette marina in the NE of the island. Go on a nice summers eve and wander around the lanes, its just paradise......infact that's what the home I stayed at is called "Paradis".

Paul.
