An alternative lifeboat?

In the wake of all the contentious (sometimes!) arguments (sorry, polite discussions) raging recently re liferafts, I came across this rather neat little sailing vessel

Microyacht10ft.jpg

(a friend had sent me a link http://www.microyacht.com to it).

And there is lots more about small boats crossing oceans at http://www.microcruising.com/famoussmallboats.htm

And then I started thinking about lifeboats, perhaps as an alternative to liferafts...... by 'small' boat standards the microyacht pictured above is huge - I think the record for a transatlantic crossing is Hugo Vihlen's 'Father's Day', all 5'2" of her - does he still have the record?

The microyacht (or, even easier, Hugo's wee boat) could be stowed on the poop deck of a ketch or yawl, and the rig could perhaps do double duty as a mizzen for the big boat. Rather than having to rely on a liferaft inflating when you might need it most, this microyacht could be a self-sustained mini-lifeboat module, equipped with hydrostatic releases in the same manner as liferaft canisters should be, so that it will pop up if the big boat does decide to sink dramatically and quickly.

Am sure it would accomodate two people quite happily - ok, maybe a bit cramped, but still a lot more comfortable than any liferaft would be...... and if there are more than two of you on board, well, still carry the liferaft in its canister - the microyacht can always take it in tow.....

What do you all reckon?

PS - Just realised I didnt mention how big she is - rather than the hassle of editing again, her total length is 10' - I am assuming that this does not include that funny bowsprit in front.....

BTW, the sketch above is of the bilge keel version - they also do a deep fin keel microyacht as well....

Charlie, you need to scroll down and to the right, and then click on 'next'.....
Do you reckon microyottie lifeboats might catch on?

Thanks Martin, it was early in the morning and me brain wasn't fully engaged.......

As a Liferaft / boat.......dunno? I think you would need a very large boat to carry it.

As a wee sailing boat in it's own right?.......Well maybe......looks like it could be fun, though I don't know if my 6'3", 18 stone frame would be very comfortable in it?? /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I have had a bit of a mooch around his site, I think I might contact him to see if I can't get a few more details, I would really like to know where he is getting his perspex domes from? Not easy in the UK..........Not cheap either, I had a look for one some time ago, but the only people I could find that would or did make them, wanted an arm and a leg!

It'll probably sail as well as the average liferaft.

No thanks; waste of time, money and weight.

Nothing quite like keeping an open mind is there? /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif I agree though, very big for the average size boat to carry.

Not a closed mind, just a practical one.

Promoting a minature boat as a workable piece of emergency equipment, on the sort of yacht you and I sail, is like reccommending pogo sticks for long distance commuters.

M, Hi, I have seen the pictures of fathers day, and it is minute, so how would this cope in really big seas, would it not be swamped? As you know, I dont have a liferaft yet, and not sure where I would put one, Cx

Ian, those Ovatek 'mini-lifeboats' do look rather neat - but they are just over-sized coffins! Imagine what it would be like inside a 9' x 4' x 4'6" high capsule with 6 other people..... or 4 hefty crew inside one 6'9" x 4'3" x 3'8" depth?

Chrissie, re Father's Day in really big seas, I would imagine that she would behave in the same manner as a ballasted corked bottle, and just bob along and roll with the punches. The real feat there is IMHO the psychological hardship of living in a 5'2" coffin, curled up in solitary confinement for 100+ days doing less than 2 knots - I tip my lid to Hugo.

Re a liferaft for your Contessa, would there be room to stow one on the coachroof between the companionway blister and the mast?
