Thinking about it it's possible that what Seajet is recalling is a match up in the Challenger series of 87 - which is the only time other than 95 that the Kiwis and the Americans could have met - but isn't the actual cup, and the Americans went on to be the challengers so without looking up the actual results of the challenger series I'd be surprised if the Kiwis stuffed the Americans, but then didn't make the America's cup itself. Might have (probably would have) taken a few races off them though. So Seajet may not be entirely wrong, but I'd claim a points victory!

Bit of a shame but you're right Flaming and that is certainly not to decry the pleasures of cruising. I race (mostly JOG and am quite pleased we couldn't get things together for La Trinitee this weekend - see JOG site for tracker) and look at the forum quite often but time and inclination mean I don't participate that much. Also too much racer bashing for my liking and sometimes it's all heat and not enough light.

Anyway, the America's Cup is not grabbing me. I would vote for Twister Ken's proposal with the stipulation that entrants have to represent countries with at least 50% crew drawn from that country.

I think you'll find it was the New Zealanders, KZ 7 if I remember rightly, later named ' Kiwi Magic '? The Aussies continued the process.

There were some memorable protest battles between the Kiwi Skipper ( Dixon ? ) and the American Dennis Connor who always reffered to himself in the 3rd person.

Wasn't KZ7 that monster the kiwis attempted a deed of gift challenge with in the mid '80's? The one that got stuffed by Dennis Connors wing masted cat after a massive court case.

You are wrong, the boat that first took the auld mug off the yanks was called Australia II, and was most definitely Australian. I suggest you do a quick google before telling me I'm mistaken too.

From what I recall of the weather (they were racing as we were making our way to the Helford) you would have had to be within 50 yards to see them...

Bad memory. From just off falmouth entrance near where they started, I could see the Helford entrance.

Certainly seemed more popular as a spectator sport than people are suggesting the Americas Cup would be. Post #13 suggests something that might be even more popular. It was definitely low cloud / misty / drizzly when we were out there with them. Then I think it was rain and strong south westerlies for a week, which given we were waiting for a window for the Isles of Scilly was predictable

you and I are both partially right; I was talking about the trials where the Kiwi's did indeed stuff Dennis Connor, rather than the actual cup.

I have done a bit of racing myself but now prefer to go fast to my destination rather than going around in circles, each to their own.

Of course if the Kiwi's had access to a supersonic, low earth orbit capable Anderson 22...

I must be getting old, I keep yearning for an ac like the 87 one in fremantle. I think it was channel 4 who did the coverage and I can still remember the theme tune as it came on (anyone remember "men at work"?).
In my opinion it's been downhill ever since (certainly for c4....)

I'll not be watching it or even remotely interested in who wins it (the F*^£king lawyers will decide that in any case!). The AC is is a shadow of a yacth race now it is all about sponsorship, big willies and who has the best legal team! Lawyers have no place in any sport!

If they brought it back to something recognisable to the majority of the boating/sailing community, it may start getting getting some respect back. Personally, I'd like to see a series of races around an offshore course with legs around each 10 miles (windward, reaching, down wind, whatever the local conditions demand; in any order), mono-hulls (yachts capable of going to sea in a force 6 if need be; normal sailing conditions for a 12m+ racing boat!), no computerised race/team back up (when you are on the water you are on your own),then we may have decent AC racing again. 1 protest per team and 1st past the post. No F'ing lawyers and no f'ing match type racing allowed!!!!

Sard you lot. I was there during the regatta last year and it was great to be able to watch it all from the shore. I'm going back for the biggun and I'm the sort of bloke who stays home during Cowes Week and the RTI.

Yerbut that was 45 foot cats and lots of'em, surely? Bit like the Touring Car Championship, whereas the AC proper is going to be like Formula One, with two entrants.
