Do they work? You betcha!
The wind blew up in Sami a few nights ago. We were bridled up to about 10 boats and the side load was too much for our CQR which pulled out. I ended up running a line right across the harbour at 45 degrees to the bow to ease the loads. Of course the 50m line was just too short so I sent the crew for a line to add to the end. He tied on a second 50m length but managed to leave 25m in the aft locker and the middle under the boat.
When I engaged forward to power us away from the jetty there was a single 'chunk' and the piece of 18mm 3 strand was parted pretty cleanly. I suspect it actually took two bites given that one strand is a different length.
After being fitted for 5 years my rope cutter has certainly proved itself! Being off a lee pontoon with 40kts blowing was not where I needed a fouled prop.
