Amazing MDL statistics

Also I was told no increase at Plymouth Yacht Haven for 2015, and they are currently refurishing the toilets and showers. The temporary limited facilities during the winter has upset some residents, though.

I bet that shut him up :D

Probably stay at Shamrock apart from the odd night or two on the Hamble. When we go down to the boat it's invariably with a view to going away somewhere and not really staying over where she's moored. Having said that Quay Fifteen at Shamrock is really excellent, as is the Yellow Wellie, and the Waterfront has changed hands and been refurbished so it can't be as bad as it was :). The toilets and showers have been refurbished earlier this year and are far better that anything MDL has on the Hamble, and the staff there are really great too. It probably wouldn't rank very highly on your list of preferred destinations but as somewhere to base yourself it ticks more boxes for us than anywhere else.

Hi Wavey,

I've been at Shamrock for a couple of years now, first boat on B pontoon and it does offer a good service all round. As a Mobo owner it's easy to get to from the M3. On days when nipping out for a quick boat ride, the several marinas on the Hamble are nice to visit for lunch or even overnight.

IOW visits are easy too of course, but for many of the sailing crews, being up in the Itchen adds too many miles on to a cross solent trip, so the Hamble suits them better which is why there was a premium for Hamble Point or Port Hamble. For us, a couple of miles is just nice for engine warm up and system checks, etc.

It does seem as though Freedom berthing has gone a little wild tho as there quite a few french and dutch crews appearing throughout the year, even at Shamrock.

Remember to say hi when you're passing 'Houston'.

Hi RR,

Will most certainly say hi if we see you on board. We may have passed you a couple of Sundays back if you were heading outbound on the Itchen as we were heading into Shamrock. We're on B hammerhead at the moment.

As you say, Shamrock is perfect for the engine warm up/cool down, and the difference in price between there and the Hamble will easily pay our fuel bill for the season plus meals out and visitor mooring fees with money to spare.

We've been one of the mad freedom berthers this year having left our home port of Penton Hook on 4 April and not been back. It's been a somewhat nomadic existence but all the MDL marinas wherever we've stayed have been really helpful and made our first season on the south coast an absolute joy. Thanks too to whoever organised the weather :) .

Roll on next season. Any concerns I had about SWMBO taking to salt water cruising after years on the Thames were completely unfounded as I have been informed the Channel Islands are on the list of places to visit next year :D

how much per metre at Shamrock and Mercury. Thanks

Thats the problem with MDL they do not exactly charge by the meter, they have price bands based on certain lengths. And the bigger your boat the more you pay per meter. Which in my mind is unfair on the larger boats.
At the start of the 2014 season I asked Trafalgar wharf for a quote for 11meter boat they have a minimum lenght charge of 6 meters BUT their price was £439.44 per month on an annual contract. (yes this is for drystack )

I would argue that is actually much fairer than charging per metre length for any length, since the area boats use goes up by the square, volume by the cube and value probably more than that. Certainly I found I could justify marina fees when I had a much larger boat (44ft), but now with a smaller boat (21ft) the marina costs represent too big a slice of the total boat value to be at all justifiable.

I think that is a very good point! My current annual MDL costs are approx 1/6 of the total worth of my 19' boat!!
