Whilst delivering our 24'6" boat from Chichester to Plymouth recently we made one leg from Gosport to Poole.
I decided to go into Salterns Marina because it's fairly close to the harbour mouth and has access at nearly all states of the tide.
We parked up fine in it's tightly knit fingers.
I was amazed to be charged £44 for one night , including harbour dues. I know it is situated near Lilliput/Sandbanks , some of the most expensive housing in the UK. Maybe that gives a clue.
Can anybody beat that for a night ?
Needless to say I shall not be returning.

out of interest we have always kept a note in our log book of how much we pay for overnight berths and for our 34' that price would be our all time worst by quite a margin ,

we would welcome a new forum on places/prices and welcome as always interesting to get feedback on others experiences of the good/bad places to go when cruising,

our current boat is our first with shore power and we are often surprised ~( being polite!) at how much per night we have been asked to pay just to hook up overnight (and in consequence we have often declined!)on top of the marina charges,

must admit to alway feeling a bit reluctant to ask how much it is going to be to stay for a night in advance (never done it on the vhf) but with shocks like yours think we might do so another time when in unknown areas, have never heard anyone else ask over the vhf - have you?

Boycott Salterns

Salterns is the worst I've ever known - charging like a wounded wildbeeste doesn't even begin to describe it. Then apart from the price, you find yourself surrounded by high white walls of motor cruisers - it must be 80/20 mobo/rags. Unless you've got a flybridge it's claustrophobic. And it's a taxi ride to get anywhere to eat and drink, unless you use the 'facilities' in the marina.
 
That is a shocking price for a boat that size, we went to Poole at the weekend and stayed in Dolphin Quay for 2 nights at a cost of £30 per day inc harbour dews for a 33ft boat.

I have made a mental note NEVER to visit Salterns and stick to Dolphin Quay on Poole visits.
 
Parkstone YC are very friendly and very reasonable ... certainly sub £30 for a 30'er ... including electric!
 
What's wrong with PTQ...(It's been a while since I was last there).....or has the Harbourmaster stopped yotties using it now there's that posh marina by the old pottery?
 
Can't beat that in this country. I paid several hundred dollars a night on the Jersey side opposite Manhatten, New York once. Does that count? (Mind you I wasn't paying the bill personally, and before you think I was being profligate with your taxes, the Queen wasn't paying either!)
 
Salterns is believed to be the most expensive in the country but has very tight turns into small berths between girt great mobos with dinghies in davits, most of which never move farther than Studland 3 times per year. A high number of boats in there are dealer demonstrators too.

Parkstone YC welcome visitors, call first preferably on Ch37 'M', or telephone 01202 738824 (Haven Office) or 01202 743610 (main office). We are cheaper than Dolphin Haven at the quay and way below Salterns but we are still forced to collect harbour dues from visitors so are never going to be very cheap as these alone are around £7/£8 per night. Harbour dues are only collected in Poole at the Quay, Dolphin Haven (the vistor marina at the Quay or the commercial or YC marinas, unlike many places anchoring is still free anywhere in the harbour. Personally I think visitors shouldn't be charged the harbour dues just for coming in the marina when at anchor they are not, but then personally I believe the real beauty of Poole is in it's anchorages anyway.
 
I couldn't remember the exact cost .. so said sub £30 ... I think it was £26 including £6-7harbour fees and a few quid for electric ... so actually makes cost of marina £16-18 for a night ... that makes it very cheap when compared with the other marinas in the harbour, and I'd rather support another club... very nice clubhouse - superb views .. and very friendly staff ... We will be back!
 
Where\'s my anchor

£16 or 17... that's more like it. I'm on the east coast so £30 night marina fees makes me go all wobbly.

by the way changed my display name mid-thread to reflect the fact I'm on the east coast. Smart eh?
 
The most I ever had to spend (on a 36' boat) was approx £50 per night at Porto Cervo about 20 years ago. We were storm bound there for several days and so it exhausted the holiday budget. However, when you arrive a team of handlers comes out to take your lines and the luxury showers are free.

Have you seen what the poor bugg£r$ pay per year?

A 32 foot boat costs £6,042.00 per year, exclusive of Harbour Dues (Crown Commissioner’s Charges – Swinging Mooring only) and VAT /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
