Am I too young for a FlyBridge boat?

Or more seriously, is a FB better with kids? I am looking at what i think is a good 35ft FB boat for sensible (ish) money and was wondering if its ok with a toddler? Like the saloon, and more space but worried about being exposed up top.

Also, a boat of that size with KAD43s on shaft - likely to be any better than 1mpg and a gentle (3000rpm) cruise? Current owner reckons 18knts and 12gph total at those engine revs which seems pretty good.

I don't see a problem so long as you invest in guard fences or whatever to stop the toddler getting up the steps to the f/b except under strict supervision and take proper precautions against tumbles. Mesh round the upstairs etc

I like the idea of a fb with my kids due to safe enviroment down stairs with patio doors closed.
Not so happy when cruising at any speed with them up stairs. When mooring up you upstairs the misses down stairs doing ropes. At somepoint you need to leave the helm go down. What do you do with kids.
Memory serves me right you have 1. This summer I'll have two and am happy to have sports boat.

If your asking does that mean your in 2 minds already.

Hi,
1st of all you can't be that young, you have been on here since it was steam operated, come to think about it,it still is!!,
(2)most people i know who have had a good Targa type boat&then try a F/B regret it&if possible come back to Targa type or hard top type sports cruiser's,
what you need is a good V42or a targa 39/40,go on push the boat out,regards m m 1. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Yes. Well I reckon I am and I'm older than you /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Seriously, we've discounted a FB as the little ones scare us witless whenever we're on one, esp thouse with a ladder up rather than proper moulded staircase. I think once our oldest reaches 7 the worry will ease somewhat as I hope he'll be responsible enough to help look after the youngest, who'll be 5 by then, when we're busy berthing or otherwise distracted.

more than one question.
-is it ok with very young kids
-can I stand travelling that slowly.
If the answer to 2. is no, the answer to 1 is irrelevent.

Interested to learn the reasons for that statement?
I've just changed to a targa style from a FB and still not sure if I've done the right thing?
Its the tent side of things that I'm not sure if i will get on with if we get another shite summer.

In two minds becasue this is totally different to everything I have owned before and is different to what I was looking at even a few weeks ago

Thing is, the more I look at it the more it seems a good package.

Does 30 count as old? I suppose it probably does *sigh*

If you're only 30 would you mind not reminding the rest of us. Coming on here when us old boys are trying to have a nap. Kids today! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Jez you have to be Bald, Red, Over 50, Over weight, Male to buy a FB and you know this or would not have asked the question. Hey using those words as acronym I've just spelt BROOM.

/forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif PS your not completely in one mind let alone two!

It always seems that the poor 'old' man gets left up on the flybridge on his own. It's either too cold and windy up there for the rest of the family, very little wind protection on a flybridge, or it's too hot and everyone else is downstairs in the shade.

At least a sports boat gives excellent protection from the wind and you can have the covers up to keep the sun off everybody.

For the social side of things I personally think a sports boat is better.

Hi,you appear to back me up with your switch, why did you switch, you soon get used to the tent bit,yes it can be a pain,i have seen this switch many/many/many times,i am only reporting what i have seen, with a wonderfull summer on it's way,i am sure you will love your Targa(it's only my opinion sir)regards m m 1.

Nothing to do with age - personal preference. Young like bling, old like function with timeless simple elegance.

Boats like Atlantics and Brooms have enclosed cockpit helms with doors to the walkaround decks, great peace of mind with little ones on board, because they can't get on deck from inside the boat or from the enclosed cockpit helm hood up or down. Peace of mind can be priceless. See MBM March, interesting piece comparing pros and cons of FB Aft deck layouts with Aft cabin layouts, Broom 425 v Princess 42. Pound for pount the Broom gives nearly 40% more living space, but not suitable for the hot med, FB with lots of outside living space better in the heat.

There can be a "disconnect" between the helm and other crew/pax on an FB boat. Some of the sports cruisers can close the cockpit helm off well from the stern access (eg aft transom doors)

PS: Imho, Broom shot themselves in the foot when they ditched the port side door to the saloon for easy deck access (ie because of the new glued in window system rather than using traditional metal frames).
