"He promised to defend British interests on issues like taxation, foreign policy and defence". Full text here

If Mr Bliar is promising to keep control of our own taxation system then why do we need to worry what Brussels wants us to do with regards to red diesel.

Or, maybe the bodies who are campaigning on our behalf for the current duties on red diesel to remain are missing a trick here. Bliar is saying he will keep control of taxation so his argument re Brussels/tax alignment are nul and void.

Or am I missing something?

Public spending -the awful truth

Of course, Blair's idea of "keeping control" is not like anyone else idea of control in the commercial world.

The same applies to the spending side, too, always doomed to fail. The NHS is always, we hope, going to improve. But if it evr came to pas that you could visit a doctor at any time, have an operation next week - then all the extra demand from the private sector would pile in. The same applies to education.

The net result is that not only is there no brake on public spending, and only the figleaf of controls on income tax, there is a near-gurante that the results of public spending will fail to deliver.

There are exceptions. The BBC - there'e a licence fee, plus extra charges for satellite cable services. Universities are now not very free. Dentists have for the most part absented themselves from the NHS. Museums charge for entry, or partly charge for entry. Libraries, swimming pools, fast "toll"motorways, strategic road bridges, channel tunnels, trains, non-standard doctors services such as signing off medical examinations.

All these show that "public spending" effectively results in rubbish services which are a whole load worse than the commercial alternative OR in the examples above, not very rubbish services or monopoly services for which taxpayers are invited/forced to pay again. Fuel duty is high cos they can get away with it.

Note that not ONE memeber of the govt has ever run a busines, nor anything approximating to a business, nor ever been paid on the direct basis of their efforts/ success. Mind you, i think the same applies to the tories too, dang.

Yeah, well he also promised not to put up the basic rate of income tax. Kept that but GB found another 65 ways to tax us so he didn't have to.

Bit similar to saying I promise not to shoot you, making you feel ok, then cutting your wrists and letting you bleed to death.

Question. Now the government has managed to get 80% of legislation from Brussels, will they now return 80% of their salaries? Will they XXXX!

Re: Public spending -the awful truth

Your sentiments match mine exactly!! I know it's not possible, but what a wonderful, efficient society we would have if at some time in their life everyone had either run some kind of business OR been paid comensurate to their own efforts AND achievements/profitibility. It grieves me BIG TIME when I look at how councils are run and all the government departments.

Re: Public spending -the awful truth

Ohhhh please don't get me started on councils etc........my neighbour's girlfriend has been off work sick for nearly 2 YEARS on full pay for supposedly having a bad back, when in fact I have spent the last year watching her mowing the lawn, wading in the pond looking after the coy carp, building a rockery and digging over her vegetable patch......to top it all, they have just made her redundant with a 16 year service pay-off and described her as medically unfit to work, so she can claim invalidity benefit at the tender age of 38.......
Now in my commercial world, my pay would have dropped to 50% of salary after 6 months, SSP only after 9 months and I would have my contract terminated after 12 months...........and I think I'm lucky!!!!
Multiply all that by the number of people who work for said council (about three times as many as would work in a comparable commercial organisation IMHO) and it is no wonder why my council tax is so high!!!!!!!!!!
Almost made me want to send photos to the HR department!!
Grrrrrrrrrrrrr
OK - off the soapbox!

So why dont you? IMHO ill health retirement and engineered redundancies are far too often employed as easy option alternatives by managers unwilling to do their job properly. They also usually mean the costs come out of pension fund or other budget areas so that the operational budget doesnt have to carry the hit. Whichever way you look at it the public purse or pension fund(and therefore its members) suffer.

Re: Public spending -the awful truth

IMHO it sounds like a very clear case of deception or fraud.obtaining goods or services, (like a permanent income?)by false something or other?

My legal knowledge is not even worth comment but the taxpayer is having to find money to pay for these parasites. Shop em!

Your local DSS should have a discreet department interested in such things.

Weyhay...

Even Godon Brown is on our side!!!

"In a speech to the City he warned he would resist any efforts from the European Union to push through "fatally flawed" tax harmonisation plans".
