Am I A Total Electronic \"Numpty\"?

I have had a total refurbishment of in mast fittings including new aerial for DSC radio. I have also fitted an alarm system. When commissioning the radio, I found, to my dismay, that the positive and negative cables (for the radio) had become "attracted" to the plastic outer casing of the alarm, above the chart table. What do I need to do to overcome this or do these items need to be moved well apart?
Looks like something magnetic to me, what do you think?

I tried 'The 12V Bible' which I'd read somewhere would make it all sound so simple - couldn't understand a word of it, so I think I'm probably a much better numpty than you.
I used to understand f*** nothing, now I understand f*** all.
(Hope this doesn't get me into trouble.)
Have a nice weekend.

I don't understand what you are describing. Do you mean the power cables for the VHF are touching the plastic casing for the alarm? If that's the case then it shouldn't be a problem. Case is plastic and cables will be insulated so nothing will happen.

If everything works as it should then don't worry about it.

If this isn't the case then can you give more information and I'm sure someone will pop up and help. If you're not familiar with the terminology then take a photo when you're next on the boat, use some drawing software to label it, and post it with your message.

The alarm casing will hold a speaker which has a large magnet, you will need to reroute the radio cable or resite the alarm casing...

Or put a brass plate over it cut out the magnetic field.

High Brian. Just to correct the concept of shielding a magnetic field.
Brass will do nothing. Only iron can shield a magnetic field. By providing a path for the lines of force.
This not to be confused with a varying magnetic field as in magnetic radiation. Here brass or aluminium will provide a kind of shielding by presenting a low resistance conductor in the way of the varying field. It acts like transformer with a secondary that is short circuited so soaking up the field by turning it to electric current and wasting it as heat.

Back to the original posting. Surely the wiring that is attached to the alarm box is not iron so a a magnet in a speaker would not cause the attraction. My only thought is that the insulation has become soft from heat of disolved in chemical such that it has become a glue.
The answer yank it apart. And replace the wiring if it is damaged.

The VHF pos and neg wires are not likely to cause any interference either way that migh kmake close proximity bad. olewill

Thanks every one. The radio was switched off at the time. I think the magnet in the alarm is the problem. So will reroute the radio power feed cables.

Thanks Oldsaltz will av a good weekend today is our wedding anaversery and Sunday is my 66th birth day.

Will come and see you next time we are in Oz. Had a great time on Frazer Island at Xmas when the Cyclone arrived! Loved our time in OZ ...the Simpson Desert was very dry we crossed it and the VB kept us going. Our Landy never missed a beat. The A/C was great for December.

G'day Mike,

Looking forward to your next visit, however I suspect the moment you clap eyes on the Whitsunday's you will be off on the water.

Speaking of the Landy (Land Rover) I have a friend known as Mark 2, so named because his eyes are very close together, a bit like the mark 2 landy headlights.

Avagoodweekend......
