Is there any real difference in quality between the various mast manufactures? Every yacht I have looked at seems to have a different make and I don't have a clue which is best!

Hello Moose

'fraid I can't really help, 'cos I don't know either. I find it hard to believe that they vary much in the basics though - like, they stand up, you can successfully dangle things from them, and they don't generaly break (we hope!). The spars on my boat are all by Kemp and they're okay, considering they're more than 25 years old.

The only thing I encountered on my mast which struck me as a bit mad was this: there was a certain amount of pitting visible around the stainless fittings, particularly between the gooseneck and coach roof. So I wanted to take at least some of them off to check underneath, and to renew the layer of corrosion-inhibitor 'twixt mats and fittings.

The thing was, the nuts inside the mast were not captive, which made removing the bolts extremely difficult, and having removed them, the nuts fell off irretrievably inside the mast. Had to then have the mast drilled out and fitted with "riv-nuts" to replace the fittings. Well worth doing, but I though it strange that the mast was, to that extent, not designed to be easily maintained...

While we are on the subject, I have a Konsort. Typical kind of boat fairly common and well known design, I thought. Why is it impossible to get a quote for a new mast and rigging without giving details of measurements that I could only get by taking everything down?

Were you in Poole the other week? I think I saw you, or else there is another Konsort caller Konsortina.
