Aluminium mast protection

I have been reading a brilliant book called 'Metal Corrosion in Boats' and in one section he talks of washing down aluminium masts once a year if possible.....and polishing them with wax I think - does anyone else do this or has heard of it - the polishing bit I mean.

Oh yes, it's very common in Denmark. It still surprise me how filthy a mast gets !!!

We washed and waxed our mast last time it was down.

Mineral oil is a bit better than wax, its purer and actually penetrates, can be used on all aluminium,

Blakes do an aluminium mast protector, I don't go much on their antifoul but, this did clean up the mast rather well.

Yep! Do exactly that every year. Usually use a general boat cleaning spray to clean, then at least one coat of Starbright Teflon Polish.

Keeps the thing in really good condition and, as others have mentioned, I'm always amazed at just how filthy it becomes in a season.
