The alternator on my 10yr old Yanmar 2GM ceased to produce electrickery
while cruising the adriatic this summer. We managed to complete the trip
due to several solar panels on deck.
Can anyone name a firm who will provide an even more powerful alternator
to replace the dud Yanmar one. I saw one firm at the S'oton show but have
mislaid their details.
Thankyou

My Yanmar 2GM20 is only 8 years old and has a 55 amp alternator. Isn't that more powerfull than yours as I thought the earlier ones had a smaller alternator. I would havd tried to get a compatable alternator from an electrical supplier to the motor trade, one who does electrics on lorries.

Have you tried Valeo or Paris Rhone?
Some folk go for car alternators saying you pay over the odds for marinised versions! Try Lewisham Automotive for marinised Valeo fitted to Volvo...I think marinised may produce higher output at lower revs whereas car alternators usually run much higher...Speak to Adverc for good advice - they sell alternators as well as "BMS"
What price reliability?

I'll third that!! When I installed a new alternator (90A) and controller from Adverc, I inadvertently connected an earth cable from the Adverc unit to a 'floating' earth that was about +2v and variable. This resulted in immediate 90A output at 18-19volts - definitely not good for batteries nor alternator! Adverc were extremely helpful over the phone and eventually we sorted out the problem. I like the 20 mins delay before full output from the alternator is demanded if batteries are low, as it allows the engine to propoerly warm up.

Go to any car breakers yard. The going price is about £15. You can get through a lot of them before coming near the cost of a 'marine' version. Choose size/fitting to suit. Revs not a problem in my experience.....I get full output at just above tickover. Car ones also usually live about a foot above a wet, salted road and generally outlive the bodywork.

Anyone got a stop solenoid for a BUKH 10/20 (made by Bosch) ?? ... Now havn't been able to source that at the scappie!

The output vs revs thing is set by pulley size, alternators typically start up at around the 1,500RPM mark whatever they're fitted to. With normal pulley sizing that means alternator revs of about 600-750ish.
Modern car alternators are very high output and V. reliable. When you look at the average repmobile having aircon, heated front/rear windows, etc. you'll find 90-110 amps is the norm. Trip down modern scrappy and get alternator and brackets, few quid to a machinest to match pulleys, sorted for £50-£100 max.

There isn\'t a 20 min delay...

I've used Advercs on several boats. As far as I know, there isn't a 20 minute delay. What happens is that when the engine is started, the Adverc first waits 5 minutes before operating, to give the engine a chance to warm up. After that 5 minutes, the Adverc doesn't start boosting the alternator output until it senses 14.0v at the batteries - only then will it start its cycle of boosting.

Adverc regulators seem to be very reliable, and they work very well. I've also found that the guys at Adverc are incredibly helpful, and that they know what they're talking about.

Try Adverc - they had a stock of proper marinised 90amp Lucas/Magnetti Marelli - an ordinary auto alternator will fit and work - for 3 seasons.
You'll need to fit a heavy duty belt (toothed on the inside) instead of the effete thing sold at vast price by Yanmar (try Quinton Hazell. Goodyear, who make the best only supply OE now.
