Alternator wiring

Been reading the wiring manual for my engine and it shows the battery negative cable attaching to the brown positive terminal on the back of my alternator. The alternator is an 80A prestolite unit part no. 900021-ALS. Does this sound right although in the manual the wiring diagram for said cable appears hatched, have i read the diagram wrong? Mines the alternator in the middle in the diagram below

Looks wrong, perhaps phone HMI and ask whether the diagram was superceded by a revised version.

HMI went bust, and Enginesplus (uk agent) are a waste of time, i have three diagrams in the book all later than this that show the same arrangement but like you say it looks wrong, did a bit of googling before i posted it here, well that was the reason i posted here as i drew a blank, will keep looking

to me it looks like the large cable shown going to the - poll of the battery go's to the + side of the battery

So you have the engine, presumably it works. Can't you just trace where the wires go? Not sure what you're trying to achieve.

Na, thats the whole point; its been sat in my garage gathering dust for more than six years so i want to wire it up, fuel it and fire it up in the workshop before fitting it. Prefer to solve problems in the shop than in the engine compartment.

OK, the positive output terminal on the alternator goes to battery positive. There may be a negative terminal on the alternator, or it may be earthed via the engine block.

Diagram wrong, all positive outputs are shown going to neg ternial on battery, not positive terminal.

Found it! the terminal thats to the right of the positive is the negative and cunning obscured by water pipe, (and confusingly displayed in the above diagram) plus i actually cant get to the terminal (stud) with a spanner or my fingers, could just get a nut on the end of the stud with long nose pliers. The packaging of this engines design would make Adrian Newey envious as the tolerances between every component is so tight you can't see what's literally in front of you unless you push other parts of the engine out the way.
