alternator problem

when I connect the key of the Volvo 2001 of my boat only the oil light is on (water temp and alternator lights are off). The engine starts ok but the alternator doesn´t charge and I think that the water temp alarm doesn´t work.

Please can somebody help me and tell me how to check that the water temp alarm is working and how to check the alternator?

Check that the brown wire is connected on the alternator. It may of dropped off.
