Alternator Identification

It will probably have identification on it somewhere, although you may need to remove the alternator to see it.

You could post a photo of it, and someone might suggest what it is.

I recently had the same problem, but the identification plate was on the engine side and could only be seen once the alternator was off. That applied to both Lucas and Prestolec alternators! Not very convenient!

About 5 years ago our alternator was replaced and I've lost all the paperwork. I can see no markings on it at all:( Might there be a way to identify it, or is likely to be some poor generic thing?

If there is nothing wrong with it then why do you want to know
If it is playing up then take it to a repairer and they will sort ot in a couple of days.
When my one on my volvo went i took it to a repairer and he told me the manufacturer in seconds
£ 110-00 for new bearings, regulator , new studs for connections etc
Many marine engine alternators are just auto ones so i am lead to believe

It can & does ramp up the amps if the battery can accept that level of charge. I have seen 40 amps going in

Indeed it can, but only by raising the alternator voltage to 14.2V maximum. If the alternator's internal regulator already produces more than that, and many modern ones do, then the Adverc does absolutely nothing at all.
