alternator connwctions

Doing some work on my volvo 2001 penta and have removed the alternator for better access. I did not take a pic nor do a wiring diagram first. Anyone know which wires go where. I think there is a B+ (batterry?), D-, and w terminals, as well as a spade connection through a hole in the casing

Help?

Connection in casing is probably tacho output.

There is a wiring diagram in the owners manual , which you can down load from Manuals & handbooks | Volvo Penta if you have mislaid your copy

You will see that B+ is the main positive output and should have the red 10mm² wire connected to it
D- is the negative connection which should have 2 black wires connected to it ( 1 x10mm² and 1x 1.5mm²)
W is the tacho connection and should have a grey wire on it

The other , by a process of elimination, must the the warning light connection and should have a brown wire on it

Hi Vic.

I'm struggling to be certain which wire goes where on my alternate on this volvo 2001 engine. B+makes sense. But there is a black wire that comes out of the alternate itself, and a brown wire from the wiring loom that seem to both want to connect to a spade inside the unit.

There is also a spade connector on D-.

Does the brown wire connect to D-, or the spade terminal marked +

Not sure if it helps, but looking at my 2003 the alternator has the heavy red cable going to the B+. The B+ terminal also has a spade connector on it where a yellow cable coming from the regulator in the alternator attaches. D- has a brown cable, and B- has two black cables, one heavier than the other.

there is a black wire that comes out of the alternate itself, and a brown wire from the wiring loom that seem to both want to connect to a spade inside the unit.

Does the boat have a Sterling 'smart' alternator regulator, by any chance. They can require an additional connection to be made to the inside of the alternator (depending on the polarity of the internal wiring of the alternator).
