I'll start - 3 weeks in Melbourne every year visiting kids and grandkids.

Bloody Hell ! Costs me that for a week in Spain every year! and my travel agent is my drinking buddy......must be catching me when I'm pi55ed.

Not difficult - under £1k each for air fares and stay with kids so no hotel bills. Still leaves us over £1k a week to spend on us and them.

1 week ( Christmas ) fully catered ( 2 squares a day plus afternoon tea ), free wine with meals. 4 people in a ski, in ski out chalet in the Alps. £1200 flights and accomodation, ski passes extra, say another £500.
hmm still got £3300 to spend.
Travel agent be damned, internet and a bit of flexibility makes a world of difference to how far your money goes! No wonder he drinks with you

Not really the travel agents fault, unfortunately I am currently living in a corner of the most expensive and corrupt country in the western world (Ireland).

We used to own a Motorhome.
Using it in a similar fashion to the boat (20-25 weekends a year, plus a holiday or two) it worked out as follows:
Insurance £400
Road tax £215
Fuel £1700
Campsites £800
Plus a few similar incidentals to the boat...
The boat costs far more to moor (haha) but less to fuel. Tax and insurance are similar to the camper once added up.
The boat costs around £1000 more p.a but probably holds it's value better than a Motorhome.
Both are not perfect, as the boat is stuck on the River, while the Camper could on;y be used for 100-130 miles from home per weekend, and both can be affected by traffic on busy days, but the boat less so.
You can drink on a boat however, and you certainly cannot whilst driving! (Yes clever clogs, I know you shouldn't in a boat, but the reality is everyone does, and as long as you don't actually drink too much, it's not an issue. A car is very different as you know...)
The biggest difference is the people. Campers are all half dead, Boaters are a good laugh, enjoy partying and are much more friendly!
Boat gets the nod until we retire and want to tour Europe!

Took family to the Far East 3 years ago, on a trip into Communist China from Hong Kong wife spent 2 hours in basement of a department store there haggling for handbags - finally bought 17, yes, that is SEVENTEEN.
Beat that?
We only went there to buy a bale of crushed velvet for cushions and curtains for new boat as it is a major textile manufacturing outlet but getting that home on Cathay Pacific is another story!
