Having just discovered my leaky 2003T oil cooler is going to cost me £700 for a genuine Volvo replacement, I'm bound to ask: are there any reputable (ie reliable) non-Volvo replacement parts suppliers?

I once read a story of a man who built a Morris 1000 from spare parts and it cost him ten times the showroom price - I guess Volvo must have read that story too...

Keypart offer genuine spares or an alternative in the rare cases where one is available, their website lists the common stuff by engine model so is easy to use and from now until November they have emailed an offer to send out orders carriage free. However, I prefer to use my local agent, Crinan Boats because I want to keep them in business here, the Volvo parts are no more expensive than Keypart, sometimes cheaper if the stock is older but they do not carry the non VP alternatives. My experience is there are very few of these, even my oil filter is only available from VP though I can get a fuel filter alternative a couple of quid cheaper.
Some VP diesels are Perkins or Renault based but I believe the 2003 was a rare one of their own.

Surely not! Volvo don't make them; there must be alternatives. Have you tried cross-referencing the part number?

Afraid so, Its a D1 30 made in the Perkins factory in Japan so you would think I could find an alternative but no luck so far.

The D1-30 oil filter is Volvo part 3840525. The Fram catalogue lists PH10411 as their equivalent. Purflux list LS801 as their equivalent. Tecnocar list R351 as their equivalent. I'm sure there'd be lots more if you cared to look.

Is the actual housing leaking? If not, most of the other parts are obtainable separately. It might be possible to repair a leaking housing by welding.

On second thoughts, the housing itself is only exposed to oil, I think, so if you have a seawater leak it might logically be the O-rings or the endplates.

It was Keypart that quoted £700... Now I have the thing off and in my hand it looks as if it might just be the joint at the ingoing end. I have to take it home and clean it up before I can be certain but my bill may have reduced from £700 to £1.20 - I've had worse days. Fingers crossed. One interesting point is that it's full of some strange gel-like muck and a blade or two of grass so I'll need to understand where all that came from (the grass obviously got through my filter). So much muck that the tubes seemed reduced to about 25% of their number. Why did the engine not run hot? What is the muck? Did the increase in pressure blow the 'o' seal that caused my problem?

Isn't yachting fun? I just read Slocum again - he didn't have problems like these!

volvo penta filters cross referenced

The filters for most Volvo penta Engines are available from car parts suppliers but most of them want to know what car they are for I just bought my service kit from www.yachtboatparts.com they have listed volvo penta genuine and non genuine side by side so you can see the price comparison straight away and there is a huge difference in prices.
The guy there told me that there impellers are from the same manufacturer that make impellers for Jabsco and the filters are from filter manufacturer for volvo penta filters and there Belts are gates belts.
