Past three years I've managed to get out of the 'family pilgrimage' to Hunstanton. Didn't quite get away with it this year and I have to say I'm more than a little disappointed with the way it's changed
Happy news is the family agree, and I am tasked with locating an alternate destination
Low cost essential, penny arcade type amusements for the kids, decent coffee and hot dog indoors is always appreciated. Somewhere that does decent fish & chips also top of priority list for some. Dog friendly appreciated and relatively easy to get to from Cambridge
Initial thought is Clacton but yet to find out more about there, so now it's over to the good folk here for somewhere better to go to

I think your suggestion of Clacton is good, it has all the things you want, but as it is now 1st January it is a bit late

Tried Skeggy a few years back Doug, very non dog type place and expensive for what it is, also trying to travel East rather than North, somewhere boaty would be good but I doubt I would get away with that :o
David, erm, I hear specsavers are doing special deals :D

Sorry David, but if you read the first paragraph again, I like to think I made it clear that Hunstanton was the family pilgrimage destination :o
So, that's where we ended up ;)

Went to Wells NTS on the 23rd Dec. Had a great walk on the beach and a browse araound the town. Then lunch on the Albatross - big steaming plate of meatballs. Lovely (if a little wet) day.

I used to go to Clacton every year from 1994 to 2002, I found it a good day out, especially with the refurbished pier and proper seaside catering. Penny arcades abound.

But also, several forumites had a lovely time in Wells last year, so that can be recommended too. The Albatross is an interesting place to eat, and the fish and chip shop is worth the queue. Miles of beach to walk.

How about Felixstowe, has a pier, good place to walk and even a nice pub at old Felixstowe. Had a lovely if not blustery walk over Christmas. You can also park up and look over the container port, so I am told.

The spot for looking over the container port is round the corner in the Orwell - A very pleasant place to sit, but I would not want to go with kids, as whilst it is fun to see the ships at very close quarters, things happen slowly and they would get bored
