Alternative auction website

If so, how do you find it? Is it a good alternative to the "other" internet auction site for boat related items?
The fees are lower and a portion of the final value fee goes to charity.

Any ideas on the audience size for viewing the site?

May be a good place to list those "over £400" items we see so often on the For Sale section?

I don't want to drift the thread, but if there are 'over £400 items' being listed (even if it's a link to eBay) please report them.
 
I have bought a number of items from there over the past couple of years. A lot of the secondhand stock comes from the owner's yacht refurbishing business, so good bargain prices are possible compared to eBay.
 
Followed the OP's link and within 5 minutes had spent £250! Will collect item tomorrow. I will let you all know if it goes well.

I'm going to list some bits there over Christmas holiday period that I don't want to put on Ebay as I'm fed up with the extortionate fees they charge there.

Now if someone knows of a similar site for cars and classic car parts, let me know!!

It might be useful but it breaks the rules of these forums.

Or would people prefer that YBW charge for placing all adverts instead? After all, allowing a sub forum of free advertising to a target audience with a £400 limit is a generous concession from a commercial organisation.

The forums also rely on users 'self policing it' by reporting problems. We don't moderate every post so unless people report things, problems can slip through.

Every other forum I've come across has a for sale section for members, I've never come across one that charges. Plus it drives a lot of google searches your way ;)

And your point is?

YBW has a For Sale and Wanted section.

I'm only a volunteer mod but YBW is a commercial organisation and a free for sale section with a £400 limit and 'no boats' seems very reasonable.
 
I don't understand the £400 limit and no boats rules. As Colvic says - every other forum has For Sale & Wanted sections that are free with no restrictions.

If you don't want to buy anything then don't read the For Sale section!

I pointed out that the forums are 'free' because Time Inc make them free. They make money from selling adverts. They choose to allow a dispensation in the yachting forums for people to buy and sell limited value items, but that dispensation is easily withdrawn if people start taking the mickey. I'm not suggesting that they are threatening to start charging, but I'm pointing out that charging would be a loghcal and available alternative if people abuse the system.

No boats and a £400 limit because allowing either undercuts one of their income streams.

Dragging this back on topic - thank you for the link, I'll also be keeping a keen eye for bargains on this site.

I'm a bit perplexed by their category structure though - it could be a lot simpler and more clearly structured as there seems to be quite a bit of duplication for no apparent reason (e.g. Electronics, Super Yachts, Deck Gear etc.) and whole category trees empty of products (Merchant Marine, Trailer Sailers). A decent reorganisation would help with navigation a lot.
 
The big advantage of ebay is the enormous coverage. Thousands scan it for boaty stuff and set up alerts. The only drawback is the commission but that isn't high compared with traditional auction houses.
