Recovery is about to start. Its taken a long time to get this cock-up sorted
sorry for the poor translation below

[Alphen aan den Rijn recovery process has begun on the crane accident on 3 August. The company Mammoet Maritime Service and Hebo carry out the salvage.

On the Oude Rijn will lie floating dock being put up around noon. Lifting the debris begins next week. Then first the fallen cranes and then the bridge portion to be lifted.

To carry out the salvage optimally precaution evacuated an additional part of the Hooftstraat. It is about fifteen additional homes, in addition to the eighteen homes that were already cleared or collapsed.]

That does seem a long time before starting but I guess there is a lot to think about. I guess the original problem was that there wasn't enough space for the right sized crane so getting in something larger is impossible. And then I guess the 'who is going to pay argument' wasn't exactly easy.

There's another angle on it here ...

which shows the extensive damage to houses and cars

It looked like a damned iffy setup from the off to me

We came through there just before the accident. I remember thinking what a good job they were doing in a very difficult position, with such tight access.
How wrong I was! It's easy to be critical after the event and when I don't have to do the job. I hope the casualties are as low as originally reported, buildings can be replaced. In Netherlands they seem to have a talent for making new buildings appear to be hundreds of years old.

I have been monitoring Dutch news site waiting for info, the latest was in the OP
Thanks. It was only by good luck that we didn't go through that day, since a lucky break in the weather allowed us to skirt the inland route and come home via Scheveningen, having left Amsterdam a couple of days before the accident.

The accident happened on a monday. Traffic was suspended from thursday, so we thought ourselves lucky to pass through Alphen on tuesday, having been forced to take the staande mastroute due to lousy weather.
I read that in the weeks after the accident flottillas were organised to help people who had never sailed the North Sea get from Stellendam to Ijmuiden safely.
