Some members of our marina association came to the aid of an English sailor, George Allaby, who had dismasted in the Bay of Biscay in bad weather. His was a 7m Bavaria B/one. Of all his possessions to be saved, he favoured his violin.

The couple brought him back to the home port of Locmiquélic and then drove him to the ferry in Roscoff.

5 days later another French boat came across the abandonned boat - in good condition - and towed it 120 miles into La Corogne where George has been able to go to deal with it.

A B/One!!!???

You sure about that, that's a sports boat of the SB3 ilk! Was he really trying to cross Biscay in that?

Bump.

Genuinely interested to know if the boat type is accurate, and if it was in fact crossing Biscay!?

Yes. There is a photo of it in the article which corresponds. They commented on how the freeboard was low.

PS. Sorry only noticed the bump now.

Good grief! Have you got a link to the article? Attempting to cross Biscay in a B/one, in bad weather, is one of the more nutty things I've heard of this week.

Having tried one, it didn't really strike me as the right boat for crossing the Biscay either ;) Would love to see the article as well..

Why would someone take their prized violin out in one of those?

I don't know. Was thinking about this earlier, and since this is a new design, it's not even like it will be especially cheap. Plenty of good, well founded offshore pocket cruisers could be had for the new, or nearly new, cost of a B/one.

Was he really actually trying to cross Biscay? Or was he just daysailing somewhere along the Biscay coast?

He was in the middle of the Bay of Biscay with 25knt winds and big waves. He put out a Mayday which was heard by the French boat about 1/2 an hour away.

So that's settled then 100% of B/ONE's crossing the Bay of Biscay have been dismasted :)
Strange choice of boat, would be interesting to hear his (Graham Allaby) story in more detail.

Strange choice of boat,

That would be putting it mildly. I doubt very much that you could find anyone else anywhere who thought sailing a B/One across Biscay was even remotely a good idea. The thing is designed to be trailered to new racing venues, not sailed!

I think, when people are criticizing the French, it would be well to remember that, not only did they bring him back to port but they also drove him across Brittany to get a ferry at Roscoff.

Agree, it was an understatement - Have tried one, and didn't find it as fun as the Melges or J/80, but it's cheaper (or so we were told)..

I'm in no way criticising the French! I'm criticising the bloke who decided to sail across Biscay in a B/One!

hi John, it must be a forum thing :)

I'd say about 90% (increase percentage ad libitum) of real-life French sailors I know feel very friendly towards UK sailors, especially in Brittany, "we are more similar to UK people than other Frenchmen", and vice versa 90% of UK sailors I met share the same kind of opinion

then there are all sorts of exceptions :D
