Hi

I have read in various guides that if you arrive at the lock from the tidal medway, before it is open, that you can moor up on the stbd side of the sluices.

Is this correct?

And if so can you moor up there at anytime and walk across to the pub etc without locking?

Many thanks in advance

Allington

Hi
If you get to Allington before the lock is open you can tie up outside on the stbd side, but generally speaking if there is enough water to get to the lock, the lock will be open. This is if the hours are between 07.00 hr and 19.00hrs. If you don't want to lock through best to let the lock keepers know if you are tying up outside. All info on www.allingtonlock.co.uk
hope this helps

If there is enough water in river for you to reach lock (we draw 3ft),there will be sufficient to go over cill and get inside.
You can moor up to starboard if longish delay going into lock, but most folks sort of "hover " outside if its only 5/10 mins or so

Ooo ......and just out of interest,if you have a flybridge do not go up too late or you may have trouble getting under Aylesford bridge.

Go up with flood to arrive at Allington about 1.5 hours before HW at lock and you should have plenty of water under you and airdraft above you.
As it normally takes about 1.5 hours at a sensible speed to get from Rochester Bridge to Allington, plan to pass under Rochester Bridge around 3 hours before Allington HW and HEY PRESTO.
You really do not want to be outside the lock at LW if at all possible. In an emergency you can moor just outside the lock gate in the weirstream up against the steel shuttering on the lock island. The bottom is reasonably clean.Lockie will advise.
Taken at Alyesford, this weekend, waiting for big tide to go out a bit ,so we can get under bridge and up to lock.

Please do not sue me if you go aground or bash your mast.:)

Thanks for your replies Celica and Oldgit

In the end we went up as far just before Allington. The high tides this weekend realy washed some rubbish into the river and we had bits of wood etc amongst the reeds etc caught by the outdrives.

Still was a beautiful day on the river saturday

We went up the East Farleigh on Friday and came back Sunday afternoon.
Have never seen so much rubbish in river.
