Unfortunately did not see the item myself but had to rely on SWMBOs account.
The weir sluices were opened by accident or design, resulting in a drop of around 5 ft in water level.Boat owners have been advised to check their boats.

Allington lock

For info the level dropped to a max of 850mm in approx 16mins. The gate was reinstated manually by Tim one of the resident lock keepers. A good reason to have people close by if you ever needed. From gate opening to fully closed and pen being reinstated was approx 24 mins. A computer glich is the suspected culprit whilst the gate was in automatic. A investigation will carried out to sort the problem. hope this informs!!!

Yes I have read comments left by John on kent on line.
Leigh barrier has a different operating system than allington and is run totally different in its operation and spends most of the year with the barriers fully open. It impounds flood water during high flows and manually releases water when its needs to. It is manned during flood events but not at any other time, but staff are on standby to operate when the need arises.
Allington is manned 24/7. It will be fully automatic within the next two months but staff will still be on site to oversee any problems, like the incident thursday night!!
As for his comment about BW only time will tell.

If you haven't already, read the comment that has now been published at the foot of the KentOnline article referred to in my previous post.

Not sure quite what the point of that post is ,as Allington is the only manned lock on the navigation and the situation unlikey to change however dire the economics .

We were there. The river didn't make the right level until about 10.00Am Friday

Yes you are right, the river level did not make up until approx ten on friday. What I meant was the gate was reinstated to the correct position within 24 mins to stop any more drop in the levels.
