Allgrip versus Gelcoat: what is best?

its tougher than the gelcoat + easy to clean / polish

this was a 5 yr old Awlgrip paint job taken with a mobi phone camera /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
 
Sounds like you have made up your mind, fair enough. If I had the decision to make again I would prep the boat myself and get a good man to apply a brush finish. Or build a polythene shed round it and employ a local spray man. I would use good, but not exotic, materials. The finish would not be outstanding, but it would be repairable and not a constant worry.

Usually new gel coat is more than 1mm.
Gel coat cannot be applied like paint so is not an option for a respray.

I can't for the life of me remember who, but I'm sure someone on here replaced their entire gelcoat with new gelcoat! Apparently it went on with a roller and then was sanded with progressively finer grades of paper before being buffed. I can believe it must have been an immense amount of work but possible!
