All Weather Boat

I am looking to buy an all weather all purpose boat with go anywhere capabilites. I like the new Paragon 25 but as yet its unproven and im not sure about the D4 300. i also like the Targa 25.1 but find its quirky looks hard to love.. Anyone got opinions on these or other boats? also D4 series v D6???

There ya go.

The Elling is a great boat - but in a completely different price range to the Paragon 25.

The russians that took the 3 Elling E4's across the atlantic last year, have put up some videos now. Part 1 and part 2.

We want to cross the Atlantic, and possibly go all the way around - hence the reason we're selling our Elling - as she definitely can't cross the South Pacific! Would definitely have another one upon our return though.

Sounds like you need a Molokai 75 then :-), I know a man that could sell you one, actually the famous Hercules herself ..... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZMJ0AsmcOyw

I have stayed aboard her for about ten days and can attest to her build, absolutely monumental construction !

I seem to have gone from one extreme to the other :-) standby for more infomarketing, brought to you by ' Nautical's how to influence friends and alienate them for free !'

Having run a Botnia Targa 25 for the last three years on the Thames Estuary (though non-tidal at present) and in most weathers, I can attest to their performance. They feel right .... which usually means they are right. Reliable, definitely - provided they are serviced regularly and appropriately. Only significant problem with mine in the time I've had her is that I had a failure of the water pump drive, which took some finding - though little sorting once identified. Oh, and the bow thruster prop fell off when I hit a piece of wood - and that was in the marina! Otherwise, built like a tank and handle like a sportsboat.

The outside loo/shower - no problem from my point of view, and highly useful if you're on deck and none too clean - you don't walk rubbish through the cabin. Mine's also got a holding tank with a Y valve.

The looks - I love 'em. But then I've always favoured function over form ..... I drive a Subaru after all.

Not, however, a go anywhere as the range is really only 150 - 200 miles or so at a reasonable cruise and with a reasonable reserve, so you won't cross oceans unless you come up with a serious auxiliary tank!

Thanks for the info. I know the targa's have a formidable reputation as the 4x4 of the sea etc and I do like the whole concept of function over form it's just that I think you can have function and form thats why I drive a BMW X5 (my third and I have driven most 4x4's ) so i suppose what I am looking for is an X5 on the water I am just wondering is a Paragon 25 the nearest thing to it??

Rodman? Well made and Sea worthy and you may prefer the design. Otherwise, Aquador, Nord Star? Other Marques that all make perfectly good Sea Boats are Beneteau or Jeanneau, Starfisher, Hardy, Seaward.... the list goes on. But if its Foul weather capability and performance you want... the WA skandic boats take some beating in their size category - weird looks or not!

I think many of the boats mentioned are rough weather more hardy boats but not all weather boats, bit like the X5 its a 4x4 ok on a grass but not much else.

Mmm, if you're looking for a boat like a X5, then you are looking for a boat with a bone jarring ride, questionable American build quality and high fuel consumption which bears no relation to the official consumption figures;) I'm on my first and very last X5

H,mm.All weather boats ?

"Yes Oldgit I would put the corvette up there with the best sea keeping boats in the size range"

Next time I am out and about ,I will look much more closely at the outline of the pilot boat going out to the Margate Roads and see if they still using those olde Nelsons or have secretly placed an order with Corvette and no doubt the RNLI are reconsidering their policy on hull types.

And as for the Botnia has anyone ever seen one more than a few yards below Greenwich ?
