I am looking to buy an all weather all purpose boat with go anywhere capabilites. I like the new Paragon 25 but as yet its unproven and im not sure about the D4 300. i also like the Targa 25.1 but find its quirky looks hard to love.. Anyone got opinions on these or other boats? also D4 series v D6???

All weather boat

All weather go anywhere boat- you will need to start looking over 30ft, the Hardy is a definite pedigree also look at the Corvette 320 it will also depend on whether your looking for accommodation and comfort, or a cockpit for fishing, if it's the latter look at the Lochin 33 or Aquastar.

If you really do want a serious go anywhere all weather boat, it could be worthwhile looking at old RNLI lifeboats.
The 44' steel hull Waveneys are based on the USCG 44' MLB, and they were designed and built with the expectation that they would be regularly rolled when crossing the Columbia River bar (I think this is where they were developed).
Here is one for sale - with a bit of extra top hamper added later, hence not so sure about her self righting properties now :

Here is an interesting web page all about the 44' MLBs - http://www.44mlb.com/

And they also have a couple of Aruns for sale - here is one of them :

The RNLI had a few Lochin 33s as lifeboats - these were the Brede class - it would be worth keeping an eye on the Nelson boats website to see if one of these turns up.

(I have a keen interest in RNLI lifeboats, as I spent 5 years working in their design office many moons ago)

Yes Oldgit I would put the corvette up there with the best sea keeping boats in the size range, had the pleasure of delivering Lochins and owning a Corvette and both never let me down in some serious sea's, the unusual Bill Dixon hull design of the corvette has earned it a very good reputation, of course I may appear a little bias as I have one!

Yes the corvette 320 is a very good sea boat. I had the earlier model, the 32 but pretty much the same. Corvette went into liquedation earlier this year don't know if somebody brought them or not

Stick with the Botnia Targa's absolutely superb performance, a favourite with Harbours masters and the Police, can take a lot of punishment. The D4 and D6's perform very well and are very economical, but there have been some reliability issues, however nothing too not reccomend one. I'd go for a bigger Targa than the the 25 though, the outside bog is not very friendly.

There is a forum member rickp who has a Elling E3 boat for sale. If it the same standard as the one show at this years SIBS, thats what you call a all weather boat, pops back up if turned over. If it can cross the atlantic.?

The Elling is a great boat - but in a completely different price range to the Paragon 25.

The russians that took the 3 Elling E4's across the atlantic last year, have put up some videos now. Part 1 and part 2.

We want to cross the Atlantic, and possibly go all the way around - hence the reason we're selling our Elling - as she definitely can't cross the South Pacific! Would definitely have another one upon our return though.

Thanks for all the advice, I want to keep size to around 25 - 27 so as to keep marina fees down. When I say all weather boating I mean getting out on a windy/ wet day when other sports / open boats will still be tied up. Something suitable for family boating so I am quite interested in any opinions on the Paragon 25 as it seems to tick most boxes...

How about this:

It seems a very interesting idea. I wouldn't think it would have the rough weather capabilities of the likes of a targa but it looks to be a nice compromise for our rain soaked isles.

Corvette have been bought by Flemming. They are keeping the Corvette brand and are also brining the 340 to market that was in development when the UK folks went bust.

Yea, saw it at Southampton, looks futuristic but a lot to go wrong with the electric drop down back section etc.

Thanks i'll keep looking..

We looked at the Botnia Targa 27 and 31. Excellent Sea boats and good foul weather vessels. But they are on outdrives (we wanted shaft)and are expensive and as has been said the outside loo on the 27 is a bit...hm..unusual. The 31 would have done us but as said the costs are high. If you like the Botnia 25... Wessex had some deals offered at SIBS.
