All the gear, no idea

Even good gear becomes porous sooner than you'd expect. One time on a tall ship I opted for the ship's oilies instead of carting my own stuff by air. It was strictly fishermen's stuff - yellow PVC, unlined. Not as cozy as the fancy stuff you buy in the chandlery but despite years of ill-treatment it still kept out every drop of the wet stuff. This sort of stuff: http://www.guycotten.co.uk/shop/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=32_59_132

You might be laughed at in the racing boy's Cowes wine bars but you won't get wet or need a second mortgage.

Well you probably will get wet if you are racing at Cowes and working hard - the sweat that condenses INside can be just as uncomfortable as a bit of spray from the OUTside.

On Thursday, I saw a good fleecy lined Musto sailing jacket in Andy Seedhouses (Woodbridge) Aladdins cave for 50 quid, and he might haggle over that. I bought instead off him, a full up to the chest salopette suit with braces for 25 notes. It's quite a little wonderland in there.

I've been wetter and colder racing Cowes Week than doing a transatlantic.
Breathable dinghy smock with a really good sealing collar is worth having IMHO.
There are lots of cheap jackets, but few anywhere near as Musto, Gill etc when it comes to the critical detail of hoods and collars etc.
