All-round red light as anchor lights

I remember when there was a big cat moored up at Hamble Point around nine or ten years ago (Enza which became Royal Sun Alliance and then Tony Bullimore bought and extended it)

It was required (by some authority) to display an all round red at the masthead for the safety of aircraft.

Now all round reds are becoming quite common in the Med and even becoming a status symbol - sort of "our boat is so big that WE have to show a red anchor light" Even boats around 20metres are showing them now when they're in marinas! There's a boat in Gouvia, a ketch, with one atop each mast.

Anyone know what the criteria are for these lights? Can't find anything about them in the CollRegs.

Are you sure the redlights in marinas are for aircraft avoidance,perhaps they may be trade advertising.

these are not anchor lights but mast obstruction lights. Mirabelle definitely will require them, all others (unless you are very close to airport) not. Especially if you already have a masthead anchor light.

These lights can be seen on some masts in Hythe Marina which is on the final approach path into Southamption airport, when the wind is in the east. It always amuses me, because if I was an airline pilot coming in too low, I would be far too concerned about the roofs of the apartments (not to mention the walls) to worry about the odd mast or two.

A few years ago there was a naval auxilliary that came and anchored close to me in Cawsand Bay, and displayed two all-round red masthead lights.

If it had been one over the other, it would have meant he was aground. But the two lights were displayed side by side at the masthead, with no white light showing. Still puzzled as to what this signifies.

Tankers show a single allround red to denote dangerous cargo aboard. I think MOD vessels engaged in ammunition carriage/transfer may do the same. 'Course, places of ill-repute might ,if they wanted to be seen from all points! Not that I'm an expert on the latter.

All RN have these two red lights seperated horizontally on the top of the highest mast. They are mast obstruction lights for aircraft (particularly helicopters). They have no applicability to Colregs.

When I bought my boat it was based at Hyères. The marina is at the end of the runway.

There were stories of masts having been struck but I suspect these were apocryphal.

But they are......

...the latest one-upmanship accessory in the Med this year.

One large British flagged chartered megayacht, anchored in Kioni kept his on all the time he was there even though he was nestled in, protected by the tall buildings, trees and terrain.
