I am tasked with delivering a 42ft Grande Banks to the Algarve. The owner is trying to find a berth down there for late spring. Apart from the usual propaganda advertising , does anyone have any experience, recommendations or advice for or against any of them as regards service and helpfulness etc. that might not be obvious. Last time I was down there was Villamora in 1980 when it was a dust bowl and still being built.
Thanks,

Paul

I went to Vilamoura a few years ago and it was defintely finished, lots of shops & bars etc, good atmosphere. Not in the boat though so can't say what what the marina facilities are like. Take the sunblock, we got seriously burnt.

two friends of mine have their boats there
one has a nordhaven 43 and the other has a
jeannau 46 sail boat in vilamoura and they
both speak very highly of it.Hope that helps.

There are four major choices marina wise on the Algarve coast, they are a). Vilamoura, b). Albuferia, c). Portimao, d). Lagos, Vilamoura the most easterly with Lagos the most westerly.

All are complete, I guess it is a question of what you are looking for, my personal observations as follows

a). Vilamoura, all the facilities you require but noisy in the season.

b). Albuferia, well sheltered, all facilities, but you are at a distance from Albuferia town.

c). Portimao, good berths with plenty of manouvering room, all facilities but again a little distance from Portimao town.

d). Lagos, all facilities, close proximity to Lagos town itself, five anchor marina.

Prices between all four are all in the same ball park. I like Lagos because it is close to my home down here which slightly biases my opinion!, but I think you will find Lagos is a popular choice.

If you would like to discuss further in detail please PM me

Regards

Adrian

AW, you might want to correct the distance from Albufeira Marina to the town. A brisk 10 min walk? Slightly uphill, but close.

And Lagos, the entrance might be interesting if you have a deep keel... Not sure of the actuall depth, just heard some tales.Hard rock bottom, which they were not keen on deepening.

Also, Vila Real de San Antonio has a small marina, as does Olhão in the Faro Ria. Sagres has some faclites too.

Oops, about deep keels on a MoBo forum. Sorry :-))

Vilamoura very handy for the (Far) airport. Yep, bit noisy, but big enough to be a reasonable distance away from the noise. Last time i was there two years ago, there were several pub singers and two of them singing "Sweet Caroline" at the same time...

Lagos every time!! Spent 9 months overwintering there 2006/7 and had a lovely time. The town remains lively during the winter, and there is an active liveaboard crowd, with lots of social stuff if you like that kind of thing. Cant see any problems with a mobo at the entrance. Lots of big deep keeled yachts there.

great task!
