What is the best way to get rid of the green mess (algae or mildew perhaps?) that accumulates on ropes during the winter lay-up? The principal ropes concerned are the halliards which are wire with rope tails so it's not practicable to put them in the washing machine.

Mild bleach solution.

Next year take the halyards out and replace with cheapo binder twine mousing lines. About £10.00 for 5kms. (yes 5,000m). Enough to last you a lifetime.

NB. UV attacks the polyproplene of binder twine so not good for years on end.

Done mine last week. I used a mild sterilising fluid solution ( the stuff used for babies bottles etc) in a bucket - just leave them to soak for a while until all signs of growth has vanished and rinse well. For stubborn marks I lay the ropes out on deck and used the jet wash.
I added some sterilising solution to the washing machine for those warps able to be detached and for the green slimy marks on deck Cilit and a bit of elbow grease worked at treat.
