A wet day in Kirkwall so a good time to play with an Alfa r36 with external antenna with a very long name - bought from Crucial.

I've got it configured OK, and it works, and when I scan I get lots of signals.

BUT, it seems to slow down the connections considerably.

There's wifi here in the marina and using speedtest and connecting directly to that I can get roughly 3Mb.
But if I pick up the marina wifi on the R36, I'm getting speeds way below one.

Any ideas what might need tweaking?

We need to know exactly what the 'antenna' connected to your R36 is. Your description doesnt sound right as the device connected to the R36 should be a wifi extender, AWUS036 or a Tube, not simply an antenna

Sorry not to be more specific. It's a 'Tube U' on the end of an antenna

Ok, is it an option to connect the Tube U directly to whatever device your using to access the internet ? It'd be useful to know if removing the R36 made a difference.

The only thought I'm having on tweaking the R36 is to change its wifi channel, its possible that its conflicting with another network but whether that would affect performance as much as your observation I dont know. Setting the wifi to channel 1, 6 or 11 may help minimise interference but only if other wifis also use those channels - router algorithms are apparently better at dealing with same channel interference than cross channel. Theres a spread of 2 channels (for 20 Mhz operation) either side of the base so if you set up channel 6 you actually affect channels 4-8.

Yes. If the wifi you are connecting to (marina), and your R36 are both using the same channel this will slow the overall connection massively. I usually have my R36 set to use Ch13, as many routers seem to default to the lower channels, but always worth checking.

thanks Vic and Robbie - changed to ch13and that seems to have done the trick. Much appreciated.
