This is the filter bowl I was talking about. I took the picture while the engine was being cranked over from cold, not been started for some months. The smoke disappears as soon as the engine starts, then it leaks oil. The mesh filter inside has been cleaned, since then its leaked.

OK... not got these myself, .... and suspect your engines are slighly different ratings than mime ... your cylinder head cooling manifold looks like full lenght, whic supports the need at a rating of about 435 HP ..., so could be a "B" model, which they later took out up to 485 hp.

Anyway ... this one looks like a bypass oil filter, mounted to take some of the lube oil from the oil gallery and filter it through down to the sump (page 494 & 507 in the manual). This will support the oil leak theory, if the gasket is damaged.

Not sure why you have crankcase pressure in here though (is this only at startup, then goes to oil leak.... and how long before oil seaps through .... and is there a similar damp coming out of the pipe that is lead from the crank case breather that is lead up to the air intake?)..... but irrespective, it should not leak like that.... (damaged gasket if the probable cause).

Trace the pipes, and if the pipe comes from the block, throught the filter and then on to the sump (on these inclined engines, that could appear to be quite high up on this side of the engine),then this is the item...

I'll do some quick research and try to find other filter types which it may be ... but basically, do try to trace the pipes origin and target, then it becomes easier to determine the purpose of the filter....

Getting pretty sure it is a bypass filter.... have a look at page 507 onwards (pretty much detailed on page 509). Suspect you have a dis-lodged gasket.... easily gets twisted when inserting... gentle removal and check ... then re-insert ... starting at one end .... holding entry point with one finger and gently sliding gasket into groove with finger following the contour of the fitting.

Re-check visually with good light ... from underneath .... When fitting the cannister on again, try avoiding pushing it too hard up against gasket, but get minimal thread on... then whilst tightening let the cannister slowly rotate.... when touching the gasket, just check that you can do a light twist (easily done with a hand with virtually no friction).... then hold cannister still whilst tightening bolt ( if it twists, you may end up stretching the gasket on one point and bulging it in other parts, and a poor seal is the result...).
