I know there must be some bikers among you. Senior son is returning to biking and needs the correct apparell.
Has anyone any views on the gear on offer.
Looking at some motor magazines it seems that the very pricy stuff is not always the best.
Regards

Haven't looked it over, but some positive comments on www.ducatisti.co.uk.
Personally I go for a decent leather jacket, with a one piece waterproof oversuit. Then its only 30 quid or so when the oversuit starts to leak, and the old oversuit can be relegated to jobs like wet and drying antifoul.
How many bike owners on here?

as of most sports you get what you pay for!

value for money has got to be "Weiss"brand,I did 30k per

annum a few years ago and it never leaked.Wore the trousers

this last weekend on the boat

Buy the additional"Armour"its cheaper than fixing bones

Cheers Joe

I have a Scooter dealership, and the Aldi stuff is not very good, nor very nice.

Oxford do some pretty decent budget kit at similar prices, or stick to Weise for unbeatble comfort, fit and quality.

All Weise stuff is fully armoured...

So, I'm with JKay!

Lidl have bike stuff in this week:-

Open face helmet (incl visor) £19;99 Also full face at £30 ish
Water proof oversuit at £9;99 ( I bought one )
Textile Jacket and trews ....jacket was I think £45.

Also Google a company called M &P I'm on their mailing list and they alway have gear at good prices,...I have to say that I use Dianese gear as my Number Ones, but nothing wrong with cheap stuff if yr son wants to get up and running!

As a matter of fact I bought 2 nice T shirts in Lidl at 2;99 the pair...when I opened the packet they look just as good as the "Blue Harbour" ones wife usually buys at M & S for a tenner each.

All best Nick

Thank you kind Sir /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Quote K.Roberts senior"If you've got a 5 dollar head buy a 5

dollar helmet"(I've got a Shoei)

cheers Joe

The trouble is with cheap gear, it's uncomfortable, and doesn't last long.

Nice stuff is always a pleasure to wear, makes you feel special, and lasts longer.

I stopped selling crap years ago, and stick to known brands which never come back under warranty.

Works for me.... /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

Yes you are correct of course..bouncing on yr arse down the road is the wrong time to regret saving money on gear..

However it looks like the original poster has looked at the quality gear and wants to take a look at the other end of the market.

Its interesting tho...i spent a lot of time trawling the net trying to find any real comparative tests on helmets ( I was particularly intested in noise levels) .....virtually nothing available out there.

I couldnt help wondering just how much ( above a certain level) is just flash value. Do you really get any extra protection from a £300 helmet that you dont get from a £100 one ?

Regards Nick

RIDE did a test a few years ago.

Better helmets in each brand did a little better in the tests, but all passed ECE 22-05 with ease, even twenty year olf flowerpot helmets, crashed helmets and pre-damaged ones.

Avoid Nitro, they are the pits.

£100 is plenty enough to get a good helmet, the best value for money vs quality is NOLAN

They have double glazing and are made from LEXAN so last a decade, have a 5 year warranty, and cost from £100.

Can't beat Nolan, end of!

Arai, Shoei, X-Lite etc, all fine lids, but really you're paying for the name.
HJC, Nolan, Vemar, all worth a look in the middling ranges (Nolan and Vemar are my faves!)

Box and Viper are acceptable trouble free budget lids, which will do a turn for a few years too.

£30.00 to £300.00!Which would you prefer?

and yes I have tested the theory(too old and wise to do it

again) /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

cheers Joe

I've as fine a collection of not-quite-right bike gear as you are likely to see. In fact the only bits that I would unhesitatingly buy again are the made to measure ear plugs and made to measure Alt Berg boots. But the great thing from these mistakes is that you learn

Personally, I would not buy fabric riding gear from Aldi or Lidl. In fact, having recently had a bad case of gravel rash, I would always recommend full leather. Wont stop no 1 son breaking bones but it will make it less likely that the plastics have to scrub grit out of his leg muscles with a medical scrubbing brush (under anaesthetic thank god!). Over the top of the leather he can wear an Aldi waterproof or a high vis fleece etc to keep warm and dry, but cow beats nylon every time when it comes to abrasion.

Helmets - well maybe, because they all have to pass the same safety tests I believe. But at the risk of contradicting myself, one other thing I would always buy is a helmet with a built in sun visor for those horrible winter days when the sun bounces off a wet road. Dark visors wont do (what happens when you go into a tunnel? ) and photocromic dont respond quick enough at 70 mph.

If he's determined to use fabric, then Hein Gericke do a reasonable range at sensible prices. But I cant help feeling you get what you pay for or at least very rarely get the best for the least. MY collection includes some Aldi gloves which so far havent leaked, but arent anything like as comfortable as some old Lewis Leathers ones I have.

HG quality has slipped, while prices have leapt.

Not flavour of the month.

Weise are as good, nearly half the price!

Mid range gear is best overall, it's very nearly as good as expensive stuff, lasts as well, but costs half the price.

Also, you get bored with some things, and they end up in the loft.

No really! Check your loft /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I tried shark helmets for a while and they are as good in the protection. I now have a shoei and its more comfortable, and quieter.

i used to do around a 1000 miles a week in all weathers on my Pan European, these days i ride a valkyrie (honds F6C 1620 cc heavy cruiser)

Like most of the other guys have pointed out, cheap gear is a waste of money,my preference is for Hein gerrick Tuareg range.I also have the older style leather jacket, jeans and engineers boots, they are not very practicle but are more for the "easytrider" look.
as for helmets try lots of them on,go for comfort over looks,i cant emphisise enough on the comfort.

and remember to treat every car driver on the road like he is an idiot, always ride with your light on

I know a lot of guys who combine both sailing and biking

me too
just moved out of my Frank Thomas gortex top after 5 years and 30000miles plus as zip gone - have relegated it to scooter work in town - dont bother taking the RT1200R into town as panniers make it too wide. Got a good deal on some BMW gear (just as well as real price frightening) which does the trick. Interesting to hear about Weise - agree that HG are well off pace at moment.
Go safely
