While stocking up on some pre-Brexit bottles of vin de table in a St Malo HyperMarche last weekend, I took the opportunity also to stock up on 'alcool a bruler' x 20L, for the boat.
This stuff indicates a '90 degrees' strength. There was another brand at '95 degrees'.

Would aficionados of the stuff guide me on the respective merits?

Buy the strongest ... it's got less water etc in it and is all the better for it. :)

It isn't that different from meths here, just a small amount of methyl violet in ours.

Some people complain of unpleasant fumes when using "meths". I don't know whether it's that some people are susceptible to the combustion products of some of the denaturing compounds in the traditional blue ( violet ?) meths or if it is that the actual composition varies with brands.

Some people claim that adding a little water to meths helps.

There is a good chance that the bioethanol fuel will burn without producing any unpleasant fumes .... It would not be much good for the purpose for which it is sold if it didn't.

It's not for drinking, but then you knew that didn't you?

Cor! Every day a skuleday..... ;)

I s'pose as long as I don't mix up my Chinon and Muscadet de Sevre et Main I should be awlrite. It's for that 2-burner pristine Origo stove I have, which doesn't respond too well on a diet of paraffin..... so I'm told.

I did ask at B&Q locally - 3 stores - and was met with a repeated 'Huh?' from the various pubescent box-stackers busy painting their nails and admiring each others' tats. Who breeds these creatures...?

I have used both 90 and 95 in my Origo cooker and never noticed any difference.

It's in stock in 11 out of the 25 nearest B&Q stores to me

It seems to be £3.44 per litre in B&Q.

A swift websearch shows it's around 1.80 € / Litre in equivalent French supermarkets. QED.

I'm sure I've read somewhere that you should add 10% water to your alcohol to prevent sooting up the pans. So I don't think there's much harm in using the 90% stuff.

I definitely prefer Alcool a Bruler, meths has a nasty sharpness to it, brings a tear to the eye.

I'd recommend 'just a splash', or 'just one finger' of fresh soft hielan' tap water to your decent single malt, unless it's 'Cask Strength', in which case up to 3 fingers.......
