AIS / VHF / RTE - Frying tonight?

Because if I'm sleeping, I don't want to be woken by an alert from a ship thirty miles away.

I want max range on my AIS receiver where I can adjust the alarm setting but not on the Echomax where I can't!

I will rely on the Echomax also to pick up small craft with radar but without AIS and, again, don't want to know until they are maybe four miles away.

But I welcome the debate.

Tony.

Then turn off the alert! That's what the switch is for. The opposition, unless it's non-radar, will see your return and steer to miss.

If you're long-distance single handing, then your requirements are very different from those of us who sail crewed.

Yup! Indeed.

Thanks everyone. That has really helped with the thought process.

Re masthead or pushpit for the RTE, I spoke with Echomax and the man there made the same comment about excessive range and alerts that Jabs was making.

When I first read Jab's post I thought "no" - I wanted max range so they could see me and avoid me, but I have been convinced that the downside is turning off the alarm, and at the end of the day it is better that I take positive action to avoid being run down rather than relying on others to see me.

In addition ease of wiring has also played a part.

So I think what I am going to do is fit a pole to the pushpit and mount the RTE and the ais stubby on there.

I'll not mess with what's at the top until some stage in the future when I unstep the mast - why fix what ain't broke has always served me well.

So sadly Salty John will miss out on a Metz sale for now, but the firm recommendations are noted.

Thanks all,

CR

There is a category for it!

After all, it transmits!

It is classified as a Ship Radar Target Enhancer (Active).

Look at your record on the Ofcom site and you will find the option there.
